    Armchair GM 2018-2019

Schenn was listed at 216 lbs at the time of his drafting:  https://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/lightning-select-stamkos-first-overall-at-nhl-draft-1.694691  (and Doughty was a MONSTER... 219 lbs at the draft!) Rielly was 197 lbs. ...

    Armchair GM 2018-2019

I think there is a difference between a "shutdown defenseman" in the antiquated sense, where all they do is play defense, hit, block shots, but can't move the puck, and asking for a defenseman who can shutdown the oppositions best by preventing scoring chances and just moving the puck up the ice...

2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs - General Discussion

Game 73 would have been the call-up date :)

    Armchair GM 2018-2019

Mostly no.  But if Matthews camp says 4 years, the Leafs aren't going to kiel over and just give it to him.  They will fight hard, including sitting a few games (not until December 1st), to try and move him off that term.

    Armchair GM 2018-2019

Agreed, to some extent.  I think there is a reason why very few players get contracts that end right when they turn UFA.  Both sides have to agree, and no matter how much leverage the player has the team can still impose to a degree beyond "limited" I'd say

    Armchair GM 2018-2019

So instead of an 8 year deal, they may be more interested in a 5 year deal (which gets them 1 year of UFA... same as Willy got).  Will the Leafs want all 3 of them up at the same point though?

    Wings @ Nylanders - Dec. 6th, 7:00pm - SNO, TSN 1050

I know they used last years stats since there is nothing on Nylander so far this year, but I'd be interested to see how Marner is doing this year in that stat.  Seems to me like he is creating zone entries at a higher rate this year than previously.

I can't wait for the uproar when Willy starts the game on the 4th line.

    Seattle approved as 32nd franchise

I'm not sure who from the Athletic has said it (or it might be here), but Sandin seems to be a "safer" choice to eventually be a Top 4 D (2nd pairing).  Liljegren has the higher ceiling, but the lower floor in terms of what he can become... Sandin already shows good positioning and gap control...

I believe you are correct.  For some reason I thought if you played two full seasons (ie 82 + 82 starting next year) that you wouldn't be exempt, but I was wrong.  Also, I forgot Dermott because I had a brain fart... he'd be protected for sure.

    Leafs @ Sabres - Dec. 4th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

Sure.  That doesn't mean, had he started the season at C, with zero time at C in a North American Pro League (remember, he played wing when he came over to the Marlies in 2014-2015), that he would have hit the ground running to start that season.  He probably needed that time with the Marlies to...

    Leafs @ Sabres - Dec. 4th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

Yeah, a hot end to last year probably built the hype machine up a bit too much for him.  He's not a Top 3 pick.  Most guys drafted between #6 and #10 don't really start making an impact until their Draft + 2 seasons or after: Examples who didn't really make a big impact until D+2: - Rantanen -...

    Leafs @ Sabres - Dec. 4th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

He's barely 20 (Draft + 1 season).  Plenty of time for him to improve.  Remember, Willy Nylander was still in the AHL at the same point in his career and wasn't asked to play Centre at the NHL level right out of the gate.

Potato GM Version: Protected: Matthews Marner Nylander Tavares Kadri Kapanen Grundstrom ? Rielly Dermott ? Goalie EDIT:  WHOLY SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT MY BOY DERMOTT.  And yes, I don't expect Liljegren up this year, so he should be exempt

    Leafs @ Sabres - Dec. 4th, 7:30pm - TSN4, Fan 590

I'm not usually a +/- booster... but man, -7 this year, worst on the Sabres.  He puts up points, but he is just NOT GOOD defensively.  Don't have time to look up advanced stats right now but they have never been good IIRC.

    Seattle approved as 32nd franchise

To start in 2021-2022.... So, given that they've already announced they will keep the same expansion rules..... yeah, way too far ahead to make a protected list except the big 4 up front and Rielly

    Contracts for the Big-3

Two thoughts (I'm sure you wouldn't read 31 from me): 1.  Maybe this Lacey guy simply cut the quote short.  Here is the full quote:  "I'll have an update by 5pm on December 1st" 2.  The deal can be heavily frontloaded in yrs 2/3 instead of yr 1 and the cap savings shrink as Herman mentioned. ...

    Contracts for the Big-3

The difference being, all of those guys were 4 years away from UFA.  So those 5 year deals bought one UFA year.  Since Nylander burned a year of his ELC in 2015-2016 without accruing a year towards UFA status, he ends up 5 years from UFA.  Hence, I wouldn't expect a 5 yr deal in this case.

    Leafs @ Hurricanes - Nov. 21st, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

Yes, you've been quite clear about where you stand in terms of this negotiation.  At the end of the day, the Leafs aren't in jeopardy of missing the playoffs without him for the first quarter of the season, so if this gets resolved in the Leafs favour over the next few days it will have been...
