    2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

If he’s asked a direct question about Marner, do you expect Treliving to just not respond? You’re reaching, and you know it. Also, a trade wasn’t the only thing Marner’s camp controlled. They also controlled a willingness to negotiate an extension, which he was eligible to sign last July - and...

    A) Treliving never announced he was examining trading Marner specifically. Just that he was looking at all possibilities to improve the roster. Which every GM who doesn't win the Cup says. Because it's their job. Seriously, where do you get some of this stuff? B) They were not expecting a child...

We also don't know who initiated the talks with Vegas. Did they come to the Leafs, knowing the team had to be at least considering a major move? With the high price the Leafs set on Marner (based on the most recent I could find, they were looking for a package that included Theodore and...

Oh. Totally standard practice. No question.

They all got some form of trade protection as soon as they were eligible - which was when they crossed the threshold to make them eligible to be UFAs.

This. There were lots of reports of the Leafs approaching Marner and being rebuffed. How that's being spun into somehow the Leafs not making re-signing a priority is beyond me.

Because the Leafs are also doing him a favour by letting him have more in-depth discussions with a team he's considering joining. It's not a one-sided deal, dude. Guys on expiring deals with trade protection don't get in the way of these kinds of moves all the time, because, really, it doesn't...

Exactly. It's a quid quo pro, basically - we let you explore the city and team of a team of your choice and we at least get some compensation for you leaving.

Unless he's being a real dick, that shouldn't be an issue.

Absolutely. Quality players can be found in the 3rd round all the time. If the Leafs can get more than that, it would be excellent, but, even just a 3rd rounder would be at least be a return with value.

Sure. That would be ideal. Given his agent, though, it feels unlikely. Unless Marner is firm on wanting to sign an 8 year deal wherever he goes, the Leafs are probably stuck just trading his rights for a mid-round pick.

If you add game 4 to that, the numbers aren't great, either, quite frankly - 3 goals, 24 points in 37 games. He does most of his production in the first 3 games of the series - and in the first round, those are generally the loosest, highest scoring games of the playoffs). Also, really, he...

I’m sorry, but if part of the reason Marner isn’t going to re-sign is that Tre didn’t come out and publicly announce getting that contract signed was a priority - despite reportedly attempting to engage in negotiations multiple times over the past year only to be rebuffed by Marner’s team - then...

    Armchair GM Thread 2025/26

I actually think Benoit has some underrated puck skills. He did some really good things with the puck in the playoffs. Some time with the skills team could help him gain confidence there as a 3rd pairing puckmover. That being said, I wouldn't pair him with Dobson, if the Leafs were to acquire...

SCF: Florida Panthers vs. Edmonton Oilers

I dunno - getting soundly beaten by Florida this year could leave him with doubts/feeling they've taken a step back. Could be enough to dissuade him from signing an extension this summer. Also, my heart wants to believe he's already made the decision he wants to play for the Leafs. My brain...

    Armchair GM Thread 2025/26

I wouldn't. Full NMC/NTC, need more of his puckmoving skills, not just swapping him out for a single other puckmover. Ideally, he gets pushed down to more of a true 2nd pairing role.

That I'd be open to, as long as another D on a bigger contract was traded as well (in this case, probably OEL or Carlo).

Which, of course, is when there's a very real chance the Leafs are going to be on the downswing. They'll need those players as either pieces they can move to bring in assets for a potential rebuild or as replacements for some of the other pieces they'll be moving out. Not getting good price...

    Armchair GM Thread 2025/26

The Leafs need players who don't cost much against the cap and can contribute now. That's what Cowan hopefully is. Trading him for another expensive veteran doesn't help address the depth issue that keeps sinking the Leafs' every spring. As for trading picks, if the Leafs really are on the...

Playoffs Round 2: Panthers vs. Maple Leafs

I agree, given the circumstances, it was a good deal. I jsut don't think Schwindt moved the needle on that at all. He was the 4th most valuable of the 4 pieces Calgary received.
