McKenzie said Babcock is "definitely not coming to Toronto" on TSN 690 in Montreal.

I like McKenzie a lot, but I don't believe he has any inside information here. I don't think anyone does, really. That obviously doesn't mean I believe Babcock will end up with the Leafs, I just don't put a whole lot of weight into statements being made about it.

Also, what other team could he cash in on a huge paycheque, and, be given some power to build a team?

Well, Buffalo. Pegula is apparently willing to pay just about any price and between Girgenson, Reinhart and Eichel they'll be starting off with some really nice pieces down the middle as well as other interesting ones(Grigorenko, Ristolainen, Zadorov). Then they've got picks 21, 31 and 51 in this year's draft so...that looks like a hell of a starting point to build a team.

Pegula, or no Pegula, it's still Buffalo!  I'd stay in Detroit before I'd move to Buffalo!  LOL

You know none of these guys live in the city proper, right?

I meant move to Buffalo in a coaching sense!  However, Buffalo is likely a better place to live than Detroit at the moment.

Like I said, they have a lot of good young pieces.

Again, none of these guys probably live in the downtown outside of maybe coaches in New York or Toronto and suburbs are suburbs everywhere.

Mac's the man. I guess that ends our discussion?
McKenzie says his instincts tell him Babcock stays in Detroit but he's not ruling out the Sabres. He's probably on the mark.

McKenzie has spoken!

If Babcock wants to become the most revered, and, the most worshiped NHL coach, the team to do that with is the Toronto Maple Leafs.  This is the team that has one of, if not the largest, fan bases in the world.  Taking this team from nothing, to winning a Stanley Cup, would elevate him to hero status very quickly...

By TML fans perhaps, but not by other cities' fans. I think that era's long gone.

Perhaps we're now in the era of "I don't want to ruin my coaching reputation by going to the Leafs disaster"

My hope is that, with the massive sweeping changes in the front office, the remainder of that era will be pretty short.

On TSN 1050 (Dave Naylor), they are hearing from a source that Toronto is out. (source is separate from Bob Mackenzie's)

It's apparently between Detroit and Buffalo and Buffalo has gone big and Detroit doesn't want to get into the bidding war.

Also, they are hearing that the reason Babcock passed on Toronto was not the lack of talent on the roster, but the lack of a clearly defined management structure (paraphrasing here, not a direct quote).

The Associated Press has a source saying that he's in negotiations with Buffalo now. Still time for a last-ditch effort by Detroit though (read: still time for Illitch to match whatever Buffalo is offering).

The Detroit Free Press & The Buffalo News are reporting this:

According to St. James, the Red Wings' offer was four years at $3.25 million a season, while the Buffalo News believes the Sabres have offered around $5 million a year.

I know the Wings didn't want to get into a bidding war and all that, but $3.25mil? If that's truly their highest offer they don't stand a chance.

Friedman made it sound like that was Detroit's offer back in January.  If that offer was still brought up in negotiations in the last couple of weeks, I'd be insulted if I were Babcock.

This may be woefully out of date but I seem to remember that there was some talk that what Babcock would be offered by the Wings would be sort of tied up in what Holland was getting paid.

Which makes a certain kind of sense. I mean if Holland is Babcock's boss, and pretty fairly argued to be just as if not more integral to the Wings' success, then it wouldn't be "right" for Babcock to be making twice what Holland is making.
