Game Notes

VAN
?Markstrom (10-13-4, 2.79 GAA, .906 Sv%) will likely start for the Canucks
?After a decent-ish start to the season the Canucks find themselves comfortably where everyone expected them to be: the bottom of the Western conference. They're 2nd last there, ahead of only Arizona
?One bright spot for Vancouver has been the play of 20-year old rookie Brock Boeser. He has 38 points in 37 games and sits 5th in the entire league in goals with 21
?Jake Virtanen, the forward Vancouver chose 2 spots ahead of William Nylander back in 2014, has also been exceeding expectations this season. He's on pace to score 19 points this season which would shatter his previous career high of 13 points set back in 15/16

TOR
?Andersen (21-12-1, 2.67 GAA, .922 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs
?Travis Dermott was called up by Toronto on Friday, while Marincin went back to the Marlies. He practiced as the 7th defenceman so it would appear as though his NHL debut will still have to wait
?Kadri missed practice Friday but Babs said that he was just given a maintenance day so he should be good to play

Injuries

?Sven Baertschi - Jaw - Injured Reserve
?Bo Horvat - Ankle - Injured Reserve
?Brandon Sutter - Upper BOdy - Injured Reserve
?Derek Dorsett - Neck - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
?Joffrey Lupul - Actually Injured - Out indefinitely
?Nikita Soshnikov - Groin - Injured Reserve
?Nikita Zaitsev - Lower Body - Injured Reserve

Weird Babcock-y thing: I genuinely think that he doesn't trust Carrick and trusts Polak, but at the same time he'd never play Polak in the top-4.

Advanced statties will no doubt strike me down, but he seems like he's played OK recently.  Within his limitations, of course.

Sure will: 39.7% CF and 33.3% GF in his past 8 games.

edit: And his partner in all those games, Borgman, managed a still-not-great-but-better 44% CF and a 53.8% GF.

Well wasn't expecting that but here we go!

Glad to see Dermott get his chance, but wish it was at the expense of Polak or Carrick not the Borg!

Advanced stats are Fake News.

The main point here is that our defense is only skin deep. So it's time to call in a dermottologist.

The main point is that Lou and Shanahan and Babcock talk about earning your minutes and not looking at cap numbers or past experience to dictate the lineup and that has fairly consistently been shown to be a load of bull dung.

Welcome to the big-time Travis!

I wonder if Dermott can earn himself a full-time role with the team this season even after Zaitsev returns. The Marlies have one of the best PK's in the AHL and Dermott's played a huge role in that. Babcock can still use another penalty killer and Borgman isn't an option.
