Corsica: advanced stats website

I'm not really enough into the advanced stats websites to know the merits and drawbacks to each (including this one), but having more sources of information and analysis is always a good thing.  I think Corsica came online within the last few weeks.

Here you go:  http://www.corsica.hockey

It popped up because War-on-ice is shutting down soon. This has most of the same features but also seems to be working on a few extra bells and whistles. Their Similarity Calculator in particular is pretty neat. Let's you select a player and it'll show all the players in the past who had seasons similar to his.

How is all of this detail/data collected? I've often wondered.

Basically: all the data comes from NHL.com. Each game has detailed play-by-play breakdowns that record each event over the course of a game, with information like when it happens and who was on the ice for each team when it happened. The guys who run these sites will generally build/buy a scrapper that more or less mines all of this information from NHL.com for them to use.

This is a blog post from someone who ran War-on-ice described how their scrapper works in a lot more detail if you're interested: http://www.acthomas.ca/comment/2014/04/nhlscrapr-an-r-package-whose-purpose-is-right-there-in-the-name.html
