Crosby's slash on Methot

There were several similar hits in the game last night that weren't called at all. Obviously none resulted in an injury, but had the referees called one of the earlier ones....

The suspension is excessive.

Not only has Polak never been suspended in a 11 year career, but the player he hit turned toward the boards after Polak had moved to check him. Polak's hit was ardly a full force body check as he seemed to slide off the opposing player probably due to the fact that the player turned at the last possible moment.

As for you comment about other incidents, Siney Crosby deliberately chopped a an opposing player in the nuts (from behind I believe) and there was no call and in another game either last night or the night before I saw a reply of one player kicking another in the same spot. Once again no call.

Even if these incidents were somehow missed by the eagle eyed two referees and both linesmen, where is the player safety department? Should that brain trust not be reviewing such incidents?

Inconsistent and poor enforcement of the rules undermines one's confidence in the integrity of the game and the league.

FWIW Crosby literally slashed off the end of Methot's finger tonight.  Anybody think there'll be a suspension for that?

One game, max. A "see, we do suspend stars!" suspension.

It's really unfortunate what happened to Methot, but that looked like a pretty routine slash. 2 minutes, absolutely. A suspension though? No way.

What?  A guy losing part of his finger is routine?

No, the slash itself was routine.

If a guy trips another guy and he breaks his ankle falling down, does he get suspended?

He should if he trips him on purpose. A slash is illegal and done on purpose. If your intentional act causes a serious injury you absolutely should be suspended.

I think it's similar to Karlsson's Achilles injury in that it's something that typically occurs during the course of a game - a slash, or skates coming together - but the outcome is drastically different. It's simply unfortunate for the players involved. Although, if you listen to Eugene you'd think the outcomes were carefully planned.

Apparently, according to the rules, Crosby should have got 5 and a game.  A slash that causes an injury is supposed to be a 5 minute major.  And 5 minute majors should come with a game misconduct.

Edit:

Rule 61 ? Slashing
61.1 Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an
opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick
contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized
as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an
opponent?s body, the opponent?s stick, or on or near the opponent?s
hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play
the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.
61.2 Minor Penalty - A minor penalty, at the discretion of the Referee
based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player
who slashes an opponent.
61.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee
based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player
who slashes an opponent. When injury occurs, a major penalty must
be assessed under this rule
(see 61.5).
61.4 Match Penalty ? The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match
penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately
injured his opponent by slashing.
61.5 Game Misconduct Penalty ? Whenever a major penalty is assessed
for slashing, a game misconduct penalty must also be imposed

By the way, a game misconduct means he just gets removed from the current game.  No suspension comes of it and the NHL wouldn't have handed him a suspension no matter the call on the ice.
