Ducks sign Kesler to 6-year extension

$1.375mil less than Ryan Getzlaf. I can't get over how terrible of a contract this is.

I bet Tyler Bozak is kicking himself for not getting $6.875M AAV for 20+ goals and 45-ish points yearly like Kesler.

But Kesler has 'character'.  Man, paying him nearly $7 million/year at 35 years old and beyond should be a treat.

This smells like buyout in year 3 or 4. Glad it's them, not us.

Does Corsi accept him as a star, gabba gabba?

I'll give some Kesler credit, he's a pretty good all-around player and I think he's a perfect fit on Anaheim as their 2C. But that's still just too much for too long.

Had an unsustainable 21.2% SH% in the playoffs this year vs. career at 10-11%, and probably parlayed that into a raise.

Great FO% of 56.2% last year though.

Agreed on all fronts.  It's a deal that will be regretted by Anaheim very soon.  With Getzlaf and Perry both having just turned 30, Anaheim is fully in win now mode and deal with the contract consequences later.

They do know that he's a 50 point player at this point and not the 40 goal/70 point player he had that one year in Vancouver...right?

I'd say that Occam's Razor would suggest that they must have looked at his stats line and read 27 Goals, 47 Assists and 75 Points without realizing that those were actually his assists, points and PIM.

Let's keep in mind that Dave Nonis is in their front office now too.

I think you guys are doing that thing where you're comparing this deal to the ones signed under the older CBA and not the new parameters having been set recently. I don't like the term here but 7 million or so for a good #2 C is probably going to be the norm going forward.

O'Reilly just got $7.5m, so you could be right.

EDIT:  I think it's more the term that is at issue.

I'm not necessarily convinced that a new parameter has really been set for a 2C. The new contracts that you're talking about here are the Toews/Kane ones I'm assuming, and I don't think we've really seen those two have any effect on other deals quite yet. It'll be interesting to see what happens in the next year with Stamkos/Kopitar/Voracek. I could see Stamkos having the clout to get a Toews/Kane type contract but I'd expect Kopitar and Voracek to stay roughly in line with the Getzlaf/Perry/Kessel/Giroux deals and be around $8-8.75mil. And Kesler at $6.875mil just doesn't look good when he goes up against those deals.

Not really. I mean, sure, deals like that and the Subban deal have sort of established the structure but really I'm talking about the O'Reilly, Stastny, Krejci deals for players of roughly this magnitude.
