Eric Staal traded to the Rangers

Staal to NYR for two 2nd round picks and prospect Saarela.

Poor Jordan.

Who is going to overreact and start throwing punches every time Jordan takes a routine body check now?

Also, how is Staal worth less than Ladd.  I mean I keep going back to Ladd's playoff production which is abysmal.  Staal hasn't been in the playoffs in years but both playoff runs he was extremely productive.

Also for those who aren't working tomorrow.  Please don't encourage TSN/Sportsnet.  There won't be any trades at this rate.

Honestly, just about every big deal trade that gets made makes me appreciate the Franson deal just that much more. No first?

Probably just a supply and demand thing. Florida was apparently all in on Ladd too so Chicago had to bid. Because of his cap hit/bad production the market for Staal might have been pretty limited.

Can we all please go back to discussing how the Leafs only got a 4th for Reimer?

Staal also has a full-NTC, and some said that the Rangers were the only team he'd waive for. Because you know, Staal's gonna Staal.

And why Polak fetched as much as Staal.

Also I just noticed that the Rangers haven't had a 1st round draft pick in the past three drafts, and they don't have one in 2016. That's because of the Nash/St.Louis/Yandle trades. So I can understand why they'd take a pretty hard stance on not making one available.

Both of their significant playoff experiences are so long ago that they're basically irrelevant. Over the last 3 seasons, they've had similar production, while Ladd came with less of a cap issue. The trade-off in assets basically boils down to the difference in the cap dollars that were retained.

I was going to make a joke about Jordan demanding a trade to the Rangers... So I just looked him up put of curiosity,  I didn't realize he signed a 10 year extention... He signed through 2024.

Signed after demanding a trade to Carolina to play with his brother.

Nobody. But Eric can now overreact and protect Marc every time he gets hit by a body check!

Maybe that's why Eric allowed the trade to happen.  He saw that Jordan was all grown up now, and that he had to move on to protect one of his other little brothers.  Next year he will be playing in the minors.

Good move by the Rangers.  Staal will add to their offence, particularly if he's paired on a line with Stepan & Brassard.  Or Nash (currently injured) & Stepan or whomever.  Rangers have more choices and it seems that this was the piece they wanted.

Carolina gets offensive-minded Finnish prospect Aleksi Saarela.
