ESPN suspends publication of Grantland

This sucks.  Unquestionably Grantland was my favourite sports (and cultural) commentary site to visit.

That's a real bummer. They'd been hit by a lot of high profile departures in recent weeks but still had some people like DGB, Zach Lowe and their Football guys who were providing great sports coverage(and people like Andy Greenwald and Alex Pappademas on the pop culture side).

Although interestingly enough I was recently listening to an episode of Richard Deitsch's podcast about what was going on with Grantland and James Andrew Miller, who literally wrote the book on ESPN, and said A) that he couldn't understand why ESPN didn't shut down Grantland when Simmons left and B) did predict its demise(although he said it'd be gone by December 2016).

To be fair, Grantland doesn't really fit in with ESPN.  ESPN is essentially a branch of celebrity gossip at this point and has little to do with actual sports discussion.

Are guys like DGB being reassigned or are they out of work?

I don't think anything is official but it sounds like the sports part of Grantland and those writers will beabsorbed into ESPN in some way.

It's the economy of internet advertising not being able to sustain paid employment.

That's certainly part of it but ESPN has been laying people off from every department.
