F'n plumbing

We've had the plumber here THREE times in the last week for leaks - all of them in different parts of the house.

We're trying desperately to save for a furnace as our old one is 33 yrs old.  But no chance of saving with us paying for the plumber's kids college fund.

Who said house ownership is fun??

Oh I hear you.

We moved into a place in August, former owners took real good care of it. The my GF was running the water in the kitchen sink and the strainer basket just falls apart.... Plumber wanted $247!!!! to replace a strainer basket.... Bought the $11 tool, the $12 replacement part, $5 plumber putty.... Fixed.

I understand that trades people are important and it's a tough job, but c'mon, $250 to fix something that costs about $15 - $20 is a joke.

Also, hired a respected and well known renovation company I found on HGTV / Bauemler's website, after getting a few different quotes (putting in a 2 bedroom apartment in my basement).... Well, the PM I was dealing with has been fired and stole 10% of my project cost, he has delayed my project (it was supposed to start last week - I don't even have the permits yet), the owner of the company has honored the stolen cash and had to get his engineer to fix the plans. I have to meet at their office tonight, for an update. Fun stuff.

Well i only call the plumber when it's do do with the drains.
I do all pipes myself.
Solder/Paste/Pliers/Sandpaper go a long way to saving money.
Oh ya pipe to. Plastic, or copper.

Same, you can save a tonne of money by learning some basic skills. I'll do the doo doo pipes too.  :P

I had the opportunity to learn from my dad and my wife's dad plus taking courses in high school and college level. I mostly learned though by just trying it. YouTube helps. :)

I always keep a length of copper and ABS pipe sitting around and some fittings. Usually takes me three times longer than plumber, but it's free.

I was never considered handy, AT ALL, but ever since getting married and having your own house where you try and save anything you can, learning and doing even the most menial of jobs goes a long way.  And in doing so, it provides a sense of accomplishment and self satisfaction.  :)

I have yet to encounter plumbing problems, and hope I don't have to for a while yet. haha

I've done 5 or 6 plumbing repairs so far.  The last few were really in tight spots, and I didn't want to be starting fires heating pipes next to wood joists.

In that situation I place a small piece of sheet metal behind the pipes to prevent charring the studs.

Or rip it all out and use PEX  8)

Or, if it's in an exposed location (i.e. it won't be covered up by drywall) you can install Sharkbite fittings.

Hmmm.  That'd work!

Speaking of plumbing, I'm trying to get Laundry (washer+Dryer) installed on the main floor of my house.

I don't even know who to call. I've tried a few people to no avail. Anyone have a tip for someone who could do the work for me? I'm in Rockwood. Guelph/Milton area.

I'm in Guelph and have the upstairs laundry setup. I'm not sure off-hand which contractor did it, but if you contact my builder Pidel Homes @ (519) 763-6782 they should be able to put you in touch with the appropriate plumbing contractor.

I would do the work yourself.  However, keep in mind if you're relocating a Washer/Dryer, there's plumbing and electrical work to do.  I bought the same grade wire and just ran it further.  Hopefully you have access for running pipes and wires.

We've had our fair share of plumbing problems in the house.  When my father was around, he used to fix the odd faucet requirement, even my uncle did the same.  Little things, such as replacing a washer, replacing and refitting piping, etc.

Recently though, particularly one morning, I found water all over a part of the basement floor, close to the water heater and furnace area.  I wondered where in heaven's this water was coming from, even my mother couldn't make out the source of the problem.  Called the next door neighbour and at first couldn't find a leak (or flow of water) from anywhere...until bingo, a small, tiny 'hole' in one of the copper pipes was spewing a nearly invisible spray of water in a certain direction. (The neighbour wrapped a cloth around his hand going all along both the cold and hot water pipe).

Called Brother Plumbing.  Charged a small fortune -- $700!  My mother was aghast at the cost, upset, thought she had been had, at first, but, the plumber explained that they did not work by commission the way other plumbing companies do (such as the previous one we called for some small faucet job).  Rather, he said, he went by how much a job will cost as stated in the company manual.  Oh, okay.

Truth is, this plumber had done a far superior job at repairing, replacing, and welding the 6 feet of copper piping that was needed to do, as the previous plumbing company, had done a cheap job, having welded it poorly.
"Whoever did this shouldn't be a plumber", he had said.

Also, we had a leaky troublesome basement faucet, which, was still like new.  The previous plumbing company claimed that the entire faucet needed replacement.  This other plumber claimed no such thing needed to be done.  The faucet is still new, just changed the washers and that's it.  No leak ever since!

It's amazing how one can be fleeced into believing that something needs doing when in fact the people who tell you that need fine tuning!

Thank goodness for the guy from Brother.  An expensive but honest bloke!
