Funniest Professional Sports Names

Champ Kind

Watching the MLB Playoffs on the weekend, I came across my new favorite professional athlete name: Al Albuquerque.  Almost as good as Robbie Robertson.  It got me thinking of other great pro athlete names.  I always thought Ziggy Palfy was unique.  Glenn January, who plays in the CFL, sounds like a made up name to me.

I'm curious, do you guys have any favorites?

Manute Bol. For some reason Manute always made me think of "minute" (as in extremely small) which is obviously the opposite of what Bol was.

...although, since it's the Olympics, he's technically an amateur athlete, not a professional one. :P

God Shammgod is my all time fave. Although he didn't have much of an NBA career, he still made a career playing basketball.

Amazing!

The Phillies' closer Antonio Bastardo is also really, really good.

I suppose it's sort of cheating if they changed their names but I've always liked World B. Free and Metta World Peace.

It is sort of cheating.  The reason I like Al Albuquerque is that, even though he was born in the Domninican, I like the thought of the parent's name him Alberto Albuquerque and not seeing anything curious about it.  Or maybe they did....

I'm reminded of when Homer Simpson changed his name to Max Power.  Funny, but not what I'm going for here.

Also makes me sort of wonder why Albert Pujols insisted on a latin pronouncement of his last name.  Personally, I would have accepted the anglosized "poo-Joles" with open arms.

Too over-the-top.  And if I remember the back-story her parent's were hippies and there some sort of statement in there.  Lame.  I prefer the names where the parents seemed to be clueless.

They let her pick her own name, if I remember correctly.

BF, you're absolutely right.  Still less funny than "Pete Peters".

Flake, thanks for reminding me, easily one of the best.
