Gallagher signs 6-year extension with MTL

Elliotte Friedman reports it's 6 years with a cap-hit of $3.75mil. Great contract for the team there. Looks like Montreal learned their lesson in regards to bridge deals.

Honestly, I'm a little surprised Gallagher would be willing to sign at that amount for so long. That's a good deal for him now and could look like a huge bargain for a 2nd line winger in a couple years.

I am actually surprised more young players don't do this.  It guarantees you to be set for life with $20 million contract and if you continue to improve the next contract will be massive.  I would take the $20 million guarantee against possible injury vs waiting a couple years for possibly more money while assuming all of the risk myself.

I'm guessing that when it comes to players who actually have to face that decision the risk that they'll end up not being "set for life" at the end of their careers, regardless of what decision they make, is pretty low.

I would agree Nik but a player like Gallagher who plays his style and has his small stature would be increasing the risk of serious injury.  I think he made a really smart play rather that gambling on a bigger payday 2 years out.  If he continues on present trend the big contract will be there next time.  If for whatever reason he regresses then he is set anyway.
