Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

We going to have a goalie conundrum v3.0 given Reimer's comments about not giving up the net?

God help us.

It wouldn't be a Leafs season without a goalie conundrum.  Until we get a Cujo or Belfour again this will go on.

Yes but not in the way you think. As people who didn't like the Bernier trade know Reimer's reaction to it isn't going to be to become more competitive in not just an effort to retain his position but also to earn himself millions of dollars he's actually going to crumple up into a fetal position, crying about how mean the Leafs were too him. Combined with Bernier's inevitable busting because he's too handsome for the Toronto market and the Leafs will be in dead last place come february, desperately offering the starting job to Drew Macintyre. GOOD JOB NONIS!

With training camp quickly approaching, I think it's time to fire up this tried and tested thread once again.

This year promises to provide us with a slightly different kind of goaltending conundrum than what we've become accustomed to over the past few seasons.

The debates, I'm sure, will still be centered around which goalie should get the most starts. However, I think most of us will agree, we won't be arguing as much about whether or not the backup can hold the fort if injury or inconsistency rears its ugly head again this season. (Unless it hits both goalies at once)

So, I pose the question(s) that will probably carry us through the first few months of the season. (Or longer?)

Which goaltender will get the lion's share of games this season, Reimer or Bernier?

Which goalie will become the defacto number one by seasons end?

Or, will both share an equal amount of starts; thus becoming an elite goaltending 'tandem' for Toronto come playoff time :)

Reimer played his best games when he was starting every night, with confidence that he was the clear frontrunner.  He seemed to feed off that stability and was able to focus on each game.  Now that he has to compete for starter status all over again, I expect him to be a bit shaky.

I'm not sure exactly what to expect from Bernier, but I think he has the edge.

Yeah, my preference would have been for Reimer to say something like, "well yeah I'm totally content with giving up my starting job to that new guy. I don't want to be controversial so I'll just bow out now and go hang out at Hasty Market until they need me."

I'm all for us just copy and pasting the important things from the article and stopping the extra few hundred clicks linking it will give this chump for most of the garbage he writes. I really don't want my off season interest showing his boss that his column is good and worth keeping.

Yeah. Plus pasting the useful things he says shouldn't take up much room at all.

Bernier is resigned to believing he's in a good spot here in Toronto.

I believe I'm in the minority here when I say I'm not convinced he will take Reimer's job away from him.

I agree. You are in the minority.  ;)

I would expect Reimer to say what he said. Would you want a goalie who simply wanted to be a backup. Competition is good. Eventually it could mean one is traded for a needed asset. I suapect the # 1 goalie will be Reimer, but either way leafs are in good position in goal.

Speaking of which, I'd probably be crossing the line to say Canadian hockey teams should have to adhere to employment equity laws.

So Reimer stopped 15 in the shoot out last night, but Bernier beat up Ryan Miller tonight.

Tough call.

So is the majority starting to waiver a bit this morning, or still status quo?
