Oh, and yes I do realize that we are doing some of these things, but here's what I want to see...
I want us to have the biggest group of personell in the entire league (there aren't any rules that says that you can't have several goalie coaches etc? are there? ) I want us to have more scouts than any other team, and try to attract the best scouts around, and scout more leagues than ever.
I also want us to take advantage of the fact that most teams underrate later picks. Imo, it's not all about the 1st round like some think. You win the draft in the later rounds by picking guys like Streit, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Kiprusoff, Kaberle, Kapanen, Savard, Elias, Hejduk, Alfredsson, Nagy, Cooke, Richards, Horcoff etc. I mean a lot of these guys are more valuable than a lot of 1st rounders. I think the leafs should continue to try to stack 2-3rd rounders. It's a smart idea what they do now, to sign people to 1-year deals and trade them at the deadline.
Look at teams who have been succesful with scouting like Detroit, but try to do it even better. I mean I don't want us to completely copy someone else, try to find good things other teams do, and try to find a niche that's even better.
A lot of people want the leafs to become like Detroit, but mostely talk about the scouting, but I think that a lot are forgetting something. You need a great organisation, you need to win. Why? Look at the players that have played for Detroit their entire careers, Yzerman, Lidstr?m, Kronwall, Datsyuk etc. Fedorov is one of the few exceptions of the better players, but they've managed to keep the best players for a very long time.
I also think that one thing that the leafs are starting to do and shouldn't be afraid to do is to look more at some european players, and don't be afraid to sign guys that are 23-30 years old. They could become important role players, and it doesn't really matter if you screw up once or twice, because they usually dont make that much money. Look at guys that came to the NHL later like Franz?n and Streit.
Oh and two predicitions:
Kadri will be gone come the deadline, and Bernier will become a top 10 goalie in the league.
