I really enjoyed this, I think a lot of these advanced stat guys deserve credit for breaking things down like they do, it helps those a little intimidated by the data heavy analysis grasp the basic concepts.

It's funny because I just watched the Moneyball film last night.

I think it's a little disingenuous the way that the hockey analytics crowd try to piggy back onto the relative acceptance that the baseball folk have had with measuring offensive numbers as a way of justifying the faith they're putting in things like Corsi to measure the efficiency of individual defensive performance. Baseball numbers guys tried for years and years to figure out a way to take the raw numbers generated by a defense to try and come up with a good way to quantitatively measure defensive ability and essentially gave up. Basketball too. Just about every complicated defensive metric used in baseball is proprietary and based on individual evaluation rather than trying to find patterns in raw data.

And that's been my biggest beef with the way the people who invest heavily in analytics have approached things. It doesn't look like they learned any of the lessons that Baseball did. I don't think, for instance, they have shown a real interest in translating the numbers they're generating into anything that actually functions as an explanation as to why one player might be more effective than another.

Damn, Extraskater.com is "offline."  Was easily the most user-friendly of the "advanced" stats sites.
Think an NHL team absorbed them?

Maybe, but would be better if the NHL itself did and offered something like that on their site.

They have a twitter feed and they have been doing site maintenance over the last few days/weeks.

https://twitter.com/ExtraSkater

Yeah about 6 days ago, thought it still seemed fishy given the new NHL terms of service.

The player usage charts (insert team, player name, position etc.,) indicate quality of competition, percentages in certain categories, etc., etc.  Nothing that we haven't already talked about.
