bustaheims said:reporterchris: The Barclays Center holds 14,500 for hockey. Last time, #isles averaged more than that at Nassau Coliseum was 2002-03 (14,930).
Nik V. Debs said:Still feels like a weird decision. Yeah, maybe you make it up in terms of ticket prices like they do in Winnipeg but I would have thought the Isles could have filled a bigger place if it wasn't a barn and they weren't terribly mismanaged.
bustaheims said:They needed to move out of Nassau, and, I guess this was their only real option without seriously looking at real relocation.

Nik V. Debs said:Eh, mazel tov to them I suppose. Still seems a bit rash.
The Sarge said:"Americans" is the popular handle folks are taking about but who knows?
bustaheims said:In fairness, they've been lobbying for a new arena in the LI area for years now, and have received little to no support from corporate sponsors, the local government and the residents of the area. I'm not sure I'd categorize it as rash.

I was just saying, Brooklyn is still technically a part of Long Island so if they didn't want to change things they wouldn't have to. It'll be interesting to see if they re-brand.
The Sarge said:Maybe they could just incorporate Brooklyn somehow into they're existing logo.
Nik V. Debs said:Well, but that's all been tied into the bigger Lighthouse project. That's failed, sure, but that was a boondoggle on any number of levels and was rejected, I'm guessing, in part because Nassau and Suffolk saw what went on in Brooklyn with Atlantic Yards.
So you're right, their efforts haven't gone well, but I don't know if they've really exhausted the idea of building a new, more NHL-sized rink further out. Rash is probably the wrong word but I do wonder about the long term viability of the decision if they're selling a maximum 14,500 tickets a night.

Maybe the fisherman will be wearing skinny jeans and listening to Grizzly Bear.

The Sarge said:I'm hearing the arena was built specifically for basketball. - Horrible sight-lines for hockey some are saying. The good news is there is plenty of time to tweak things there a little.

We SHOULD have hockey back by then.
