Kadri facing possible suspension (edit: 3 games)

1 pm #NHL phone hearing for #Leafs Kadri for hit on #Wild Backstrom.  No hearing for his match pen on Grandlund.

I don't think anybody has had a hearing with the league and escaped suspension (right?), so Kadri is pretty much guaranteed at least a game.

edit: And here's the hit for anybody who missed it:

Watching it over and over, there's no way he sticks his elbow out.  He's not paying attention to where he is and he just hits him, but he doesn't stick his elbow out or anything.  Doesn't look to me like his elbow even moves until after contact.

Jordan Tootoo got 2 games for a similar incident a couple of years ago:

May be mitigated somewhat as Shanahan noted that Tootoo looked up and saw Miller before crashing into him and actually made the contact worse by jumping as he entered the crease.  I don't think Kadri did that.

I'm seeing it for the first time. There was zero effort on Kadri's part to avoid contact (saying the very least.)  I'm guessing he's missing time.

Probably, but I really think he didn't have time to avoid it (which is still his own fault but he didn't just go at the goalie).  He's not watching Backstrom the entire play, he's circling around facing away from the goalie, and when the puck comes down towards that area he spins around and hits the goalie - you can see him life his arms after he hits the goalie, in the same way that a player would lift them to try and avoid contact.  Looks to me like he hit Backstrom before his body could react to avoid him.

He'll probably get something for not being aware of where he was on the ice, but nothing about that looks intentional.  To go back to Tootoo's, he was driving to the net with his head up and jumped into him.  He'll probably get a game.

This might sound a bit ridiculous but I think Backstrom's embellishment of the collision contributed to his injury via throwing his arms over his head accelerating the back of his head into the ice.

Buffallo will beat a Kadri-less Leafs team, giving them 4 points that end up being the reason they don't get the 1st overall pick.

I agree Backstrom's embellishment looked a little overboard.

I'm of two minds here - I think Kadri gets 1 game, because he has no prior history, but the goalie was in the blue paint, and he made no attempt to get out of the way...

...but also, Gionta wasn't suspended for running over Reimer two years ago, and Lucic wasn't suspended for the Miller incident, so precedence would indicate that Kadri shouldn't get more than a warning.

Tootoo suspension above happened after the Miller incident.  NHL wanted to step up protecting goalies.

I think he should get 3.  To me, it looks like he turns and sees him, realizes he's gonna hit the goalie, and decides to make the most of it.  I don't see any elbow, but I see full shoulder contact with no attempt to avoid Backstrom at all.

(*ignoring any precedence that louisstamos talks about)

I agree with both parts of that. Though I wouldn't be suprised if he had an idea where Backstrom was either and was anticipating some sort of collision.

Even though Tootoo got only 2 for cutting in towards Miller, facing Miller the whole time, and jumping into him?  There's a precedent video in this thread.

I still don't think it deserves a suspension. Backstrom is outside the blue paint and on his knees. So no matter what Kadri does it's going to be "contact with the head".

As mentioned earlier, the play at full speed sees Kadri turn and move into him at virtually the same time with no elbow.

If this is the kind of thing the league is looking to crack down on and not the hit near the end of the game on Phaneuf where 2 players hit him from behind, then I'm not sure what the message is. I'm sick of inconsistent league discipline (Nash hit etc.).

Even better is that John Shannon reported on Twitter that the league looked at the play in which Kadri got a match penalty and said no further discipline was coming, that the hit was a body hit, and that the right call was made on the ice.

So...basically they are saying the right call was a match penalty for a body check.

Kadri deserves a minimum of two games.  He absolutely drives his elbow through Backstrom's head.  His elbow is close to his body, granted, but as contact is made is arm drives through and Backstrom's head clearly snaps back.  Although I will acknowledge that Backstrom's after-the-hit state is a bit overboard.

I indicated in my post that I was ignoring precedent.

But, to respond to your comment, I feel that supplementary discipline is typically inadequate.  The Tootoo one should have been more as well.
