Kesler traded to Anaheim

Dave Nonis said yesterday that if Spezza or Kesler got moved, "then you might see some dominoes fall."

Let the dominoes fall where they may....

Sounds like Anaheim got majorly hosed. Bonino just had a breakout year and beat Kesler in points!

That is puzzling. Not only that, but they threw in the big defenseman Sbisa, and the 24 overall pick. That's almost a kings ransom. Good for Vancouver.

Yeah, I mean I just can't understand how Anaheim makes that deal.

Sbisa's a pretty mediocre defenceman. Bottom pairing guy who doesn't play on the PP and isn't a top-4 penalty killer. His possession stats while being fairly easy minutes also aren't anything to write home about. He was likely just a throw-in to make the cap work.

As for Bonino, I'm guessing the Ducks are pretty confident that Kesler's point totals will rise and Bonino's will drop when their playing situations are swapped. And I think that's a fair guess.

Bonino did have a breakout year and has a very affordable cap hit. But, 20 of his 49 points came on the PP and in terms of even strength points he was actually 6th best on the team, right on par with his regular linemates Palmieri and Lindholm. He's also 26, so it's not like he's a young prospect with a huge amount of upside; he's only 3 years younger than Kesler.

I think it's a good return for Kesler but I don't think it's as baffling a trade for Anaheim as it may seem at first; Kesler is by far the best player/asset in the deal.

Didn't realize this at first, but Bonino averaged just 11:40 of ice-time at even-strength last season. That's 3rd line minutes. Kesler will eat up a lot more than that and he'll go up against much better competition while still scoring at a similar or even better rate. Like you said, he's the best player in the deal by far.

Yeah the idea that this is a steal for Vancouver seems bizarre to me.  Bonino is 26 and just had his first big-ish year. Sbisa is easily replaceable. Considering the mess Vancouver is in neither guy will be a key part when the Canucks are competitive again.

Basically Anaheim got sort of the perfect 2nd line center while Vancouver didn't get much in the way of rebuilding assets other than a late first round pick.

I don't think Vancouver did all that well here, either. A 3rd pairing type defenceman, a centre who would on the 3rd line of a good team with some PP time (like he saw in Anaheim) and a late 1st in a weaker/shallowish draft for a very good 2nd line centre? Possibly fair value, but nothing more than that.

That looks pretty good for ANH to me. They are loaded with quality young players, including a couple of studs on defense; losing Bonino and Sbisa is a very minor blow. They also keep their 6th overall pick. Kessler had 25 on an offensively barren team last year. Ducks are in awesome shape.

Don't forget that Anaheim has Ottawa's first round pick this year, which (if I recall correctly) is in the Top-10.  So, they'll be adding another very good player as well.
