Kovalchuk Announces His Retirement

TGfireandice: Ilya Kovalchuk has announced his retirement. This is not a fake.

Uhhh, what? He has like a billion years left on his contract!

That's definitely a loss for Jersey, especially considering what they gave up to trade for him, and again for the cap circumvention penalty for trying to sign him to the first couple contracts. The cap benefit recapture penalty actually isn't too bad in this case - only 250K a year, although that's until 2025. (Edit: Busta beats me to it)

The toughest part though is certainly losing one of the best offensive players in the league...

Wow. My first thought was that there might be something fishy in terms of the money he's already made but last year would have been the first of the 6 years where he was slated to make 10+ million.

Will be impossible for NJ to replace him. He's incredibly talented. But I can understand the desire to go back home to roots.

It's actually not that bad. $250K a year until the 2024/2025 season - mainly because he barely played under the contract.

Conspiracy theory mode: Does the Devils' financial disarray play any factor into this?

I think the worst part for them is that they won't have a 1st round pick in 2014 because of the penalties for the original contract and the fact that they missed the deadline to sacrifice the pick in last year's draft. They're going to be a bad team this year, so, they're losing a really good pick.

I still have no idea why they didn't forfeit the pick from when they went to the Stanley Cup Final.  Now they could be forfeiting a top-10 pick next draft.

...that's what I was eluding to about the cap circumvention penalty (1st plus what...3M cash?). Unless Schneider stands on his head, you're spot on - I can't imagine they're going to do much. (Heck, even then, where's the offense coming from?).

Pretty amazing he's leaving 56M on the table for the next 5 years. I guess there's more than money to the decision.

Wowzers. When I saw 'Kovalchuk Announces...' I assumed it had something to do with Sochi. This is insane. I've always been a fan of Kovys. I think he's arguably the most underrated star in the game. His size and defensive game always seem to get overlooked.

Parise last season. Kovalchuk this season. Probably Brodeur next season. They've got a replacement ready for Marty of course, but there's no replacing Parise and Kovalchuk. Especially since their farm system isn't anything to write home about. And like busta says, their likely top-5 draft pick next season is going to be forfeited.

Sure must suck to be a Devils fan right now.

What the eff???

I just popped in to see if anything interesting was going on... and was not expecting this

He's going to play in the KHL, no?  I would think he would make most of it back.

The story is that they missed the deadline - they thought they had longer to make the decision than they actually did. The truth of that story is in question, but, that's the only explanation that seems reasonable outside of them really really wanting a particular prospect.

Parise, Kovalchuk, Clarkson and a 1st all gone for nothing in return.

As somebody who's been jealous of New Jersey's successes for many years, my gut reaction is pretty much a Nelson Muntz "Ha Ha!"

My gut isn't taking the high road.
