I know it's only July 1st, but I got eager.  A look ahead to the first 10 game chunk.

Even though I made this in July, bumping now, the chunks are almost upon us.  Let's hope the team doesn't blow chunks right out of the gate.

Pretty tough schedule to start, although with the parity being what it is these days I think you could probably say that for every 10 game stretch.

And with the exception of Buffalo every team in the bottom-5 last season made pretty significant upgrades to their team. Things are going to be very tight this season.

I look at all 8 teams that missed the playoffs in the east last year and none of them jump out as significantly upgraded, including the Leafs.

I'm hopeful that the Leafs have a better all-around lineup than last season, so that they can roll 4 lines more often.  Too often Carlyle would rely on the top 2 lines and wear them out with too much ice-time while the 3rd/4th barely played.  Looking at all the pickups this summer, they should be able to ice a decent bottom 6 that can actually play minutes.

Tough to say that about Florida and the Islanders. Just the changes in goal(and I'll count having Luongo for a full season) count as pretty significant upgrades.

I was specifically talking about the Islanders and Panthers. New York added 2/3 of a potentially solid 2nd line and a top-15 goalie. Defensively they're still suspect, but losing MacDonald is probably addition by subtraction. I think they will be right in the fight for that final playoff spot. The Panthers added a top-10 goalie IMO so that alone would classify as significant for me. They didn't do much to improve their atrocious offence from last season, but some growth in their younger players should help in that regard.

There weren't a lot of major moves, but, most of them - including the Leafs - made a series of smaller upgrades that could translate into significantly improved play as a team.

My that same token, though, some of the teams at the top of the standings saw their depth thin out a little, bringing them closer to the rest of the pack.

Yeah, last season Islanders had a team SV% of .898.  Halak for his career is .918 SV%, so that alone is a significant upgrade for them.

Of those teams in the first chunk, I can see the leafs going 4-6
50/50 vs MTL
Split with DET
Win vs BUF
Win vs NYR (edit was FLA, had them on the brain for some reason)
50/50 vs OTT
all the rest a losses and Grabbo's hat trick vs the leafs with 3 assists by kulie...

Even Buffalo I wouldn't take for granted vs the Leafs.

I will say we win at least 7 of them games. col and maybe NYI will beat us and maybe Pitt or Bos gets a point.

Based on injuries, quality of team and past performance I would say that most of the 1st 10 are actually winnable games.

Montreal and Toronto will always be competitive games.  Pittsburgh's defense and goaltending will still be question marks (their depth is maybe a little better but not really), the Rangers are weak up the middle because of injuries, the Red Wings are old and injured, Buffalo is bad, the Islanders and Senators are somewhere around the Leafs level.  Boston and Colorado really stand out as the two toughest opponents IMO.

The Leafs could wind up 7-3 or 3-7 in this stretch and I wouldn't really be all that surprised either way.
