Leafs Acquired Jonathan Bernier

Fanatic

Leafs have acquired Jonathan Bernier in exchange for Matt Fratin, Ben Scrivens and a 2nd round pick.

So who is # 1 and who is # 2?

Or is it 1 A and 1 B?  :)

I'd rather they had traded away their 1st this year. Frattin alone is too much. He's gonna be a star. Book it.....

Dave Nonis is just horrible.

Did we seriously just give up Scrivens, Frattin, and a 2nd for a backup goalie? If management wasn't content with Scrivens, could they not just have signed a backup they deemed better in free agency? I hate this team sometimes.

Don't love the deal, but don't hate it either. Would have preferred to have dealt Scrivens in a separate deal to recoup some of the lost assets. Hopefully, Bernier lives up to his potential. If he does, the Leafs come out ahead here. If not, they basically gave away Frattin and a second for a slight upgrade in Scrivens.

My thoughts exactly.  Matt Frattin has Dustin Brown written all over him.  Now he's going learn from the original Dustin Brown...

Scrivens was never going to be anything more than a back-up. He's a dime a dozen player. No loss there. It's a second and Frattin for Bernier. Bernier has the highest potential of any piece in the trade. I would have felt a lot better if the pick was a 3rd or a 4th, but I'm still content with the trade.

I dunno. Frattin may be good but now we have two solid tenders. Scrivens is no big loss. The pick I don't like losing.

CTB I basically agree with you. But I think it's open whether Bernier or Frattin has more upside.

I like that it's a future pick so there is time to get more picks in those drafts.

I think what people often forget about Frattin is that he's already 25. Realistically, he's already at it approaching his ceiling in terms of potential. While there obviously exceptions to the rule, in general, skaters - especially forwards - are at their peak at around that age. Basically, odds are, he is what he is and he's not going to improve a ton on that.

Not a fan of this deal. Reimer has more games and better stats than Bernier and Frattin is a good forward.

I don't mind giving up Frattin but along with Scrivens AND a 2nd for a guy who might not even start? Nonis got ripped off.

Not a fan of this trade. Not one bit.

One thing that is concerning is that the Leafs now have yet another hole to plug in their forwards. Gone (or likely gone) are Bozak, MacArthur, Frattin, and Komarov. Last season those 4 guys came in at a combined $6.875mil. It'd be mighty difficult to replace those guys at a lower or equal cap hit. Bernier will also probably double Scrivens' salary.

I don't really agree with this. Frattin had some personal issues prior to joining the Leafs that held him back or he would have made the step to the NHL sooner. He's still now making the adjustments needed to be a good NHLer. He's got wheels, a scoring touch, and is strong along the boards. I'm guessing he has another level or two to show before he peaks. Goaltenders are generally more unpredictable in their evolution at the pro level. I think the Kings got the better player, but Bernier is still young, so lets hope I'm wrong in the long term picture.

I liked Frattin a lot but as pointed out he's 25 and Carlyle didn't seem to have a use for him (I know he was hurt). Scrivens is a " meh". I just do not see the need for this deal - that ticks me off most - and we're giving away picks again. that ticks me off even more.
