I don't want to ruin anyone's day but I think there's a chance Chicago's lineup might be better than the Leafs'.

I think I'd take our bottom defensive pair over theirs.

Yeah, I've not been amazed by TVR yet either and Seabrook is a vastly different player when not playing with Keith.

Oh no, I meant like the actual 5-6 pairs. Polak on the 2nd pairing still gives Chicago the edge.

Yeah, I figured that.

I was more commenting that I don't think the difference between the second pairs is as large as some might think either.

Ah that's fair. Losing Oduya did really leave a big hole in their top-4. And then trading Daley for Scuderi didn't exactly help their on-ice product either.

Yeah, I probably should have dialed back the controversy with that one.

Hah. It's an interesting point though. Back in the offseason I questioned whether Chicago was going to be one of the elite teams again this season. In the playoffs they were basically just playing 4 defenceman and downgraded in that department in the offseason. And they lost Saad, Sharp, and Richards too. Their depth isn't nearly what it used to be. Thankfully for them Kane went super-human and Panarin made a very good transition to the NHL.

Nik's super-controversial claim about Chicago made me want to look into them just a little more. This season will likely be the first in 7 years that they will not finish as a top-5 possession team in the league. They're currently 11th, which is basically unheard of in Chicago-land.

Toews and Hossa are also having their worst possession seasons in that time frame. From the 08/09 to 14/15 seasons Toews has been at 57.27% and Hossa 56.28%. This season Toews is at 51.57% and Hossa 51.92.

Same goes for their even-strength P/60. Toews and Hossa dropped from 2.21 and 2.15 respectively in 7 seasons to 1.51 and 1.20. That's a pretty massive drop in production.
