Leafs sign Ranger

Who do the Leafs have that naturally plays the right side? Phaneuf, but who else?

Franson. Kostka and Holzer typically took up the other slot on the right. And Liles moved over to the right when Kostka was hurt.

In 07/08 his ATOI was over 25 minutes in 08/09 it was over 24 minutes.

He will be 29 in September, lets hope he's able to log these kind of minutes again.

Any word on the deal? Is this a 1-way, 2-way ...? Is he just signing back with the Marlies?

I think many of us thought he would be on the Leafs this past season but that never came to fruition. Not a bad depth signing if he is actually on the team this year. He is at least as good if not better than Kostka, and Kostka got quite a bit of playing time last year.

Ranger and Holzer played a fair bit together with the Marlies after Holzer waa sent down if I remember correctly. And i expect Holzer to be given every opportunity to make the team this year.

Gunnar-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Franson
Ranger-Holzer
Brennan/whoever-under-$800k

Make Liles and Fraser disappear for cap/roster space. Although that coule be very, very difficult.

The Leafs might have to take a small cap hit on Fraser and stick in him with the Marlies, where he belongs. Whatever he's awarded over $925K will count against the cap, but, realistically, it won't be a significant amount.

DarrenDreger: Paul Ranger's deal with the Leafs is for 1 year...around $1 mil.

Wouldn't surprise me if the actual number is $925K, but, that's just a guess on my part.

I am hoping the details on Ranger put him at 925k or below as well in case he ends up not making the club.  This signing may be a tactic in the Franson negotiations or more likely to get Fraser to come in at a lower number during the hearing.

Not likely.  Signing Paul Ranger to an NHL deal is in and of itself a succesful and important step for the team.

Agreed. Ranger has been a legitimate NHL d-man in the past and the Leafs must be hoping he can be that again.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The whole not wanting to play in the NHL thing, that it's been five years since he's played a full NHL season...it doesn't fill me with a ton of confidence in him. It's low risk and everything so it's not a bad signing but I'm skeptical that he plays a big role this year.

He played well for the Marlies, hopefully the rust is off and he's ready for this, could be a really useful player.

A huge question mark though both because he has been away from the game and also his mental makeup as far as wanting to play this game.  I doubt he gets anything substantial and I doubt anybody else was knocking at his door.  If Nonis hands out more than 925K he must think the last CBA abolished the cap.  Where is all this money going to come from unless he has some kind of a deal slam-dunked to open up some cap space?  I will be shocked if Ranger signs for more than 1 million, the one year pact is just to get his foot back in the NHL door.

Is there ANY public indication as to why Ranger has refused to play in the NHL over the past few years? It is unusual to have a player willing to play professional hockey, but not top-tier professional hockey.

There seems to be some unspoken understanding among the media to not publicly ask Ranger anything about this hesitancy. It's very unique.

Any ideas?

He's been asked about it several times, but he's consistently refused to answer it beyond "family reasons".  I'm assuming everyone just gave up asking.  Anything said is pretty much just speculation.
