Dreger says its 7 years at $8.5mil.

I know Lundqvist has been one of the best goalies in the league since he came in, but that type of contract for a goalie his age scares me. All big, long-term contracts for goalies scare me though. They are just way too unpredictable.

Lundqvist is one of the few goalies in the league I can believe will still play at a very high level into his late 30s, but, still, very risky. I wouldn't have been comfortable with more than 5 years.

He is not currently playing at a very high level and has actually lost the starting job.  I think he will regain form but for 7 more years???  This will be the second act of the Luongo contract.

That's really not true. He had a rough start to the season, but, since then, he's been excellent. He's posted a 2.06 GAA and a .927 Sv% in his last 15 starts. Talbot was given back to back starts, yes, but, Lundqvist has most definitely not lost the starting job. That was more of a reward for Talbot's excellent play rather than anything else.

Here's his last 5:

SV%:  .893, .939, .818, .953, .919

Here's Talbot's:

SV%:  .862, .946, 1, 1, and a .667 in a realeif game with only 3 shots faced.

I think King will play much better but this contract is gonna hurt later.

I wonder how much James Riemer's agent will be asking for then?

Thats a little too long and a little too much but what the heck were the Rangers going to do?  Trade him?  Let him walk in July?

They really didn't have a choice here.

Why does this situation sound familiar?

That's really going to hamstring them.  Lundqvist has been nothing but awesome for them year after year and as long as he is playing 60+ games I think the deal makes sense.  Once he starts cutting back on the total number of games played though that's way too much money to sit on the bench for 30 games out of the year.

To put it in perspective, can we get both Bernier and Reims signed for let?s say 9.5M (8.5M Lundqvist and 1M for whatever backup Rangers have). I believe it is possible even for less e.g. 4.5M and 4M.
I do not know how about you but I am more comfortable with Bernier-Reimer tandem than Lundqvist and some no-name back up.

Exactly how I feel!

Hell of a price.

Assuming I did my math right, Lundqvist will be 38 turning 39 midway through the last year of his contract, which I think is going to present itself as a pretty big problem for them.
