Matthias to Avs for Colin Smith and a 4th round pick

Smith is 22. Has 34 points in 54 AHL games. Probably just AHL depth.

The 4th seems about right.

Yeah. Smith seem more like a contract to even things out from a reserve list POV more than anything else, and helps gives the Marlies some depth to compensate for the guys that have been brought up to the Leafs with all the injuries.

4th round pick is exactly as expected.

Was against the Marlies last year but sweet nonetheless.

So PAP's gotta be a 2ND rounder at least?

Nah. PAP's numbers are pretty paper thin and I think people know that. If Matthias had gone for a 3rd, sure, but I think PAP is still anywhere from a low 2nd to low 3rd.

?

I'm sure Smith is just filler, but I wonder if he's someone ala Morin that the numbers guys think might be a bit of a rough diamond/project.

I mean probably nothing, but it'll be interesting to watch at least.

does anyone have a list of the 2016 draft picks the Leafs own now ? It's probably gonna get bigger this week...

Just found this on TSN's site....                    No team has more picks in June?s draft than the Maple Leafs, with Toronto (12) surpassing Buffalo (11) on Sunday. In addition to their own picks in Rounds 1-7, the Maple Leafs have Pittsburgh?s first-rounder (Phil Kessel), New Jersey?s third-round round pick (also from Pittsburgh), as well as sixth-round picks from Anaheim (Korbinian Holzer) and St. Louis (Olli Jokinen).

Toronto's 1st
Pittsburgh's 1st or 2nd
Toronto's 2nd
Toronto's 3rd
New Jersey's 3rd
Toronto's 4th
Colorado's 4th
Toronto's 5th
Anaheim's 5th
Toronto's 6th
St. Louis' 6th
Toronto's 7th

Don't forget those two wonderful 3rd round picks the Leafs have to give up for Lou and Babcock.  They have to give up two 3rds in 2016/2017/2018.

Yeah, that'll be interesting. I wonder if they pick up another third somehow between now and the deadline if they don't just get both picks out of the way by giving Jersey back their 3rd and giving Detroit whichever one they get.

It's possible, but I wonder if the plan isn't to say trade down from the OTT 2nd next year to a lower 2nd and a 3rd at the draft to re-coup at least one of those picks (maybe both).

That strikes me as something that'd be tough to plan for without knowing where the pick will end up. If Ottawa's pick is in the 45-50 range then you probably can't pick up an extra third for trading down.

Fair enough.

I still think the best course of action might be to wait and see how this years deadline/draft and next years deadline go before giving back the picks. It also might be best for the re-build to have those guys/picks in the system that one year earlier for developments sake and the future core's "window". That's just a gut feeling though.
