McJesus loves him some Leafs....

Does anyone think it matters not if we win the lottery? McDavid is a huge Leafs fan. Bigger than most. His father Brian was also a leafs fan.

Does anyone think the lottery and a little time is just a formality until McLovin dons a Leafs jersey?

When his ELC is done, he can go where he choses. Leafs would likely get him 3 seasons from now....for free (I think?)

When you read all the articles with McDavid, he constantly talks about the leafs. Over the years there was always that one guy we thought would come but always signed elsewhere? Perhaps this is the guy that would come? Imagine a 22 year old McDavid, developed somewhere else besides this crap show joins the leafs just as we are getting stable? Joins a team with Nylander, Reilly, Kadri, Gardiner and a few other good ones we have plus maybe a Strome or Marner?

I don't think its a pipe dream. Its no secret McDavid has always said he wants to play for the Leafs.

Thoughts on this?

Leafs wouldn't get him for free in 3 seasons.  He would be an RFA, which means the team that has him would have the right to match.  Also if they didn't match it would be the kind of deal that would cost the Leafs 5 first rounders.  For a team like the Leafs, signing McDavid in this fashion would be a death knell.  He is a great hockey player, but he is still only one great hockey player.

Right. Forgot about RFA. When could be get him for free then?

Unrestricted free agency after 7 years NHL service or age 27, so basically after 7 years for McDavid.  He may want to play for the Leafs, but he won't have the freedom to make it happen for quite a while.

If he did a Lindros and demanded a trade after the draft (to the Leafs) my head would explode.

Of course the media around Toronto would run him out of town for having bad character after that.

Unfortunately, Lindros didn't end up in Toronto until his career was almost over.  We can wish for McDavid, Stamkos, or Tavares, all we want, it's unlikely any of them come home to play for our Leafs!
