BREAKING: #Stars acquire left wing Travis Moen from Montreal in exchange for defenseman Sergei Gonchar.

Pierre Lebrun reports that Dallas will retain 8% of Gonchar's salary.

EDIT:

@renlavoietva

Stars are keeping 400 000$ of Sergei Gonchar salary in that trade. So Gonchar cap hit in MTL will be 4.6M$.

Every so often I hear or read a guy's name, and I think to myself, "That guy is still in the NHL?!"  That's the first thing I thought of when I saw Moen's name.

I had to go check -- he's only 32.  I thought he was nearing 40.

Dallas now has a Franson-sized hole in their blueline.

And the Leafs have a....Nichushkin...-sized hole in their forwards.

I though to myself, "well, that's just silly"

...and then I remembered Dallas traded both Neal and Niskanen straight up to Pittsburgh for...Goligoski, was it?

I'd be dangling him for a 1st rounder. From the sounds of it everybody wants a defenceman (especially righties) but nobody is making any available. He's played well and put up good points so far this season, but likely doesn't really have a future with the team long-term. The front office should make it known he's available and try to create a bidding war between a few teams.

Wasn't Gonchar the player we thought the Leafs got back in 2000 because there was a shell player profile page built for him on the Leafs website?

Let me try out my salesman patter here...

"Let me tell about Cody Franson.  Big boy, 6'5"!  And plays like he's 6'5.5"!  Does he lay out big hits, you say?  You betcha, he lays out big numbers of hits, led all NHL defensemen last year!  8th in defensemen scoring just two short seasons ago.  Is he clutch?  Well, let me tell you, he scored two goals against the eventual Stanley Cup finalist Boston Bruins in a Game 7.  And he doesn't happen to shoot right, does he, you ask...?  Why, yessiree, he does!!  Cody Franson is the answer to all your defenseman prayers, and all for the small sum of a 1st round draft pick, preferably from a non-playoff team in denial.  Past performance does not guarantee future results, all sales are final.

fair enough.. and funny - but could you do that back then? I remember the page just being his name and pic with no stats... but anyway, I was just thinking back to the fun times.
