NHL could force Cherry, MacLean off Hockey Night

I'd be fine with it. I don't like the idea of the NHL deciding who gives analysis and trying to temper criticism but in this specific case I don't think either guy adds a ton to the show anymore. McLean's an ok host but he hasn't been a decent foil for Cherry for a long time. A coach's corner with, say, Elliotte Friedman and some random out of work NHL coach who actually wanted to talk about the X's and O's would be more interesting to me than Cherry trying to push whatever weird, self-aggrandizing agenda he has from week to week and McLean nodding his head.

I'm not a big fan of Cherry, but I don't mind Mclean.

Perhaps move Friedman to the 1st intermission and McLean to the 2nd for the Hot Stove where all he'd really be doing is cueing up the reporters from the different cities. He's had a lot of practice cueing up Cherry's idiocies week after week.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cherry do something else. Maybe something to to do with junior hockey.  I don't know, follow some prospects around and offer advice and praise in the way only he can perhaps? I don't know, done correctly, it could be both informative and funny.

As much as I am no fan of Don Cherry, I don't think it would be appropriate for the NHL to be dictating to the CBC on whom it should retain or even what the contents of the broadcast should be.

I believe it should be left up to the CBC to decide.  Besides, there have been times when Cherry didn't always say something to rile or rankle others.  And besides, if the public doesn't like Cherry, why do they continue to watch him and MacLean?  CBC's most popular segment?  For a reason obviously.

The part about Burke being fired is not a far-fetched scenario that may very well play out if the Leafs find themselves on a downslide similar to last season.  No one knows whether Rogers/Bell or rather, what Rogers/Bell will be thinking or doing about the above potential...

...if there will even be a season to begin with.

Could? Would? What happens if?  You know it's a slow time in hockey when this generates interest. Other hard-hitting columns soon to come from Steve Simmons; " Is Nazem Kadri Really Janet Jackson??" and "Leafs May Sign Bigfoot To Shore Up Defence".  :-\

We could always move him to centre!  ;D

I cant stand Cherry myself. But he is a huge advocate for the sport and has really helped the ratings for many years for HNIC. He has earned the right I beleive to leave on his terms for the most part

I like the TV persona that Cherry pushes (which isn't his real personality), I like that he supports the troops as I have many family in the Canadian army sincerely trying to make a difference in the world and I like that he promotes hockey so effectively.

Although he is wrong on occasions, the way he covers it up is humourous to me.

The thin skin of some critics is embarrassing.  I figured I am hyper-sensitive to most discussions, but apparently not.

Go Team Cherry!!!!

While Cherry has served his purpose for many years(for both hockey as a whole and for HNIC), said purpose has passed him by.

Far too many times he's come off as a bigot and said things any human should be ashamed of. It has nothing to do with thin skin. I expect his comments from the drunk 90 year old at the end of the bar at the local tavern, not from a guy on a national broadcast during prime time.

I think Cherry is wrong less then most in the media.  They are not critised as hard.  And I think outside of Toronto, more people are going to go along with his opinions on Europeons, French-Canadians, etc.  Most Cherry-haters I've met are part of some group that has also been discriminated.  He's well loved by many.  He's not going anywhere unless it's on his terms.
