NHL Rookie of the Month Club

OK, I couldn't resist. With the Leafs taking the honors 3 of 4 times, it's now simply a question of which Leaf will win for February.

Through 3 Feb games so far:

Matthews: 4 points - 1/3
Marner: 4 points - 2/2
Nylander: 4 points: 4/0

So, who takes it? My money is on Marner again.

Maybe gonna set some records too...

Most goals: 34, Wendel Clark, 1985-86 (Auston Matthews is at 25 [on pace for 39])
Most assists: 40, Gus Bodnar, 1943-44 (Mitch Marner is at 32 [50 pace])
Most points: 66, Peter Ihnacak, 1982-83 (Marner is at 46 [73 pace], Matthews 44 [69])
GWG: 8 Howie Meeker, 1967-47 (Matthews is at 6 [9 pace])
PPG: 9 Dan Daoust, Walt Poddubny, Alex Steen (05-06) (Nylander is at six [9 pace])
SHG: 3, Zach Hyman, 16-17 (supplants Gus Mortson, 2, 46-47)

That would be nice, my money is also on Marner.

Also, Hyman, Brown, Zaitsev and even Soshnikov are playing good latelly.

Putting this here, because I put the franchise record book stuff here.

I can't figure out how to use Hockey Reference so I can't see era-adjusted scoring rates for teenagers' NHL seasons, but Burtch did about a month ago. Here's the chart he made:

Interestingly, another reason for optimism in Leaf Land is a Toronto historical connection worth noting. Between 1942-43 and 1943-44 the Maple Leafs had Gaye Stewart and Ted Kennedy join the team. That is the last time one team featured two teen rookies posting this level of production in succession and led to the opening of what is typically described as the first dynasty in NHL history, where the Leafs won five Stanley Cups in a seven-year span from 1944-45 through 1950-51.
