Supposedly with a senior advisor role. Do the Leafs get a draft pick?

No.  After making Edmonton, Buffalo and Toronto pay compensation they scrapped any compensation for a coach/GM who was fired.

They really should give those teams the picks back.

Although in fairness, Toronto's coach technically wasn't fired.

Did they? I know there were discussions about it, but I don't think anything official had happened yet. The appropriate meetings to make that change official haven't happened.

That's stupid. They should change the rule going forward but anyone fired before their change the old rule should still apply.

Thinking about it, you are right.  They were supposed to discuss it at the GM meetings in Vegas this week.

I'm not sure if Nonis being hired as a consultant counts as enough of an executive position though?  I mean I think it's pretty stupid if some teams owe compensation and others don't simply based on the title they hold however.

They're leaving it in for a year and it'll be re-addressed after that. Bettman's not a fan of it.

This also continues the grand tradition of Nonis only being able to get a NHL job by being hired by a buddy.

To be fair I think the whole league is so incestuous at this point that's probably true for 75% of people who get hired.

Thought for sure he'd find his way to Calgary.

They didn't want it to be *that* obvious.  I'm talking about the being hired by a buddy part. Nothing else. Please don't ban me.

The last thing I saw in this regard was a Q & A with Bettman  between periods of a game in the finals when he said there would be no changes for a year. Gary seemed more than a little steamed at the decision to award compensation because he had insisted on there being none for the last several years and was opposed by the GMs.

IMO, Bettman took the position that compensation is what they asked, begged, carped and bitched for, and now that they have it, they can live with it despite how ludicrous it is to compensate a team for the loss of a coach or executive that has been fired.

In this instance, the article made it clear that the announcement would be after July 1st in order to avoid having to grant compensation.

It may be the case that the Leafs are doing the same regarding the hiring of Futa from the Kings.
