Malkovich, Malkovich?

This is absurd, however, it should not go unnoticed that Kessel finished 4th in RW voting with 68pts (2-10-28). There were 3 other Leafs receiving votes - Phaneuf 25pts (0-6-7), Franson 1 (0-0-1) and Reimer 10 (0-2-4).
Congrats to Kessel.

Here's my reaction to the voting system:
Kunitz is a 1st team All Star?
Subban is a 1st team All Star?
Beauchemin is a 2nd team All Star?

They all had good seasons and maybe that's the way their seasons should be rewarded but those threw me a little - I wouldn't have quickly thought of them in that regard.

It also likely screwed Taylor Hall out of a nice bonus.

Not so much, no.

CraigCustance: Told that Taylor Hall hit all his exhibit A and B bonuses anyway. All-Star vote didn't cost him any money.

It would be pretty strange for Subban to win the Norris and then not be a 1st team all star no?

I think this is one of those things to remember when talking about end of year awards. Guys who get paid to write about hockey can still be idiots.

For anybody who wasn't following this on twitter, all the members of the PHWA were actually sent an email reminding them that Ovechkin played right wing this year before the voting.

Wasn't Ovechkin kind of terrible while he was lining up as a LW?

When he finally moved back to RW his stats took off no?

If that is indeed the case (my memory isn't always the greatest) then this is even more hilarious!

Beauchemin was also 4th in Norris voting, so for that, a 2nd team all-star nod falls in line.  Some of the really wacky vote-getters were highlighted by James Mirtle:  Nick Leddy, Zidlicky, Chris Stewart, Parenteau, Wheeler, Saad.  Nick Leddy was 6th among defensemen on his team (Chicago) in TOI/game, and he got 2 all-star votes!  And among goalies:  Emery (four votes), Price (three), Nabokov (two), Fleury (one), Holtby (one).  Wow.

Looking at NHL.com's article about the all-star teams is a study in PR and damage control.  First, there's no direct mention of Ovechkin's double status this year at all.  But the article goes right into how switching positions worked for Ovechkin this year, and how's he's now been an all-star at multiple positions in his career.  In writing, the only mention of second team all-stars is to acknowledge the players who were first time all-stars this year.  And the the graphic which actually shows all the first and second team all-stars has Ovechkin's second entry at the very bottom of the graphic.  I'm surprised they didn't use a different picture of Ovechkin, too...

Yes. It's never happened that I can recall. I guess I just haven't accepted him as a true Norris type dman (yet?). To utter his name in the same paragraph as other Norris winners seems weird to me.

If I had my pick of all the dmen in the league, it might be a while before I got to Subban's name.

I expect this one to be used a lot as well, when trying to discredit the value of these awards.

I'd like to see the 45 guys who voted him a LW be revealed so we can laugh at them.
