Penner to Washington for 4th rd pick

I get that he's inconsistent but he's still played a fairly regular shift with Getzlaf and Perry. Odd that they would break that up for what I would imagine is a small return.

They probably needed the cap room for Robidas.

Edit: Upon closer inspection, that doesn't seem to be the case.

For the sake of McPhee's tenure I hope he learned from the Martin Erat debacle.

Someone somewhere said it was a 4th round pick

Yeah, everybody is jumping to that conclusion but as you said, it's not that. $10mil in cap space prior to their moves.

They did need to open up a spot on their reserve list to add anyone, though. I mean, I guess they also did that with the Fasth deal, but, I also imagine they'll add someone else before the deadline passes tomorrow.

Not that I would have traded Forsberg for Erat but it wasn't like he acquired a terrible player in that trade.  Erat is a 50 point player who, while not a defensive savant is pretty responsible in his own zone.  And even though he wants out really badly, it isn't like he has dragged his butt around in Washington.  He's playing hard for them.

Is Penner, your part-time 1st line winger and friend of your top two forwards the guy to move out in that situation though? We'll see what else they do, but right now their left-wingers are Beleksey, Winnik, Maroon, and Palmieri. Even if they're bringing somebody else in they could have used Penner in the playoffs.

Well, clearly, there's more to the story here. The Ducks are rumoured to be involved with both Vanek and Moulson, though.

Yeah I imagine they'll grab at least one of those guys. Or try very hard to. If they manage to get both I'll be quiet, but I don't see that happening.

They also have a few guys in the AHL that I imagine they're considering in that spot. They're taking a risk, for sure, but, likely a calculated one.
