PHI trades Lecavalier and Schenn to LA for Weal and a third

I mean, I think that Weal's value is pretty darn minimal at this point, but still, why would the Kings do this? If even the Flyers are retaining something like 50% of Vinny's cap hit this is just dumb.

I also love how, not that long ago, Lecavalier and Schenn being moved in the same deal would have been a blockbuster, and now it's a cap dump.

How could that possibly work cap wise? That's 8 million dollars.

Flyers are retaining 50% of Lecavalier's cap hit, so, he'll only count for ~$1M for LA this season (what with prorating and all). Schenn's got about $1.8M left, and I think LA has some LTIR space.

EDIT: They're retaining 50% on BOTH contracts, apparently, so, only about $2M on the cap for LA this season - and with Weal going out, and LTIR space from Greene, it works.

I was bummed out that the Kings were able to make out pretty well in the whole Mike Richards fiasco, but I guess I'm glad that Lombardi felt bad enough to make this happen.

I don't know if I've mentioned it recently but the NHL's cap is just ridiculous.

Also, it still seems like a dumb move on LA's part.

Maybe I have LTIR wrong, but the cap savings only apply to the instant that you make the move to place a player on LTIR?  So on December 15th, the Kings had 670ish in cap space so Greene would only be a savings of 1.8M and not his full 2.5M salary?

If Lecavalier retires, his cap hit is gone and Schenn is a UFA at the end of the year so no cap impact beyond this year for LA.

His salary was going down to go down to 3.0 after the first three years at 6.0, 6.0 and 4.5 so it could have been Lecavalier's intention to retire after the first 3 years of this contract.

Yeah, but, according to nhlnumbers.com, they also had ~$1.4M in space to start with, and Weal coming off the roster frees up around $300K.

I wonder if Schenn is a guy who will look good on the bottom unit there with the style of game they like.

He was statistically very good earlier this season.

Hey, if Lecavalier retires Tampa still has to pay him for his bought out contract, right? Or is it a lump sum thing or...?

They'd still have to pay.

Ah. That probably takes some of the sting out of walking away from 9 million.
