Rebuilding the Leafs

Ok Leaf fans, lets have some fun. We're heading into the the dog days of summer and the daily torrent of Leafs news that we get from the various media outlets is going to whither away like a grape on a vine. Leafs news is going to disappear faster then Georges's manhood did whilst swimming in the pool while on vacay in Seinfeld. My point is this, we're going to need something to talk about for the next few months. So rather than argue about this, that, and the other thing, I thought it might be fun to put our grey matter to good use. And at the same time still feed our hockey craved madness.

So, here's the scenario. You're the president of the Leafs and you've just learned that your entire team has disappeared. Can't be found. And training camp is only a few months away. At a meeting, convened by the commissioner, it is decided that the league will support the rebuilding of the franchise by offering their own assets. So your challenge is to build a Leafs team using the players coaches and GM's from other teams. The rules are simple, and when I say simple I'm talking Homer Simpson simple. You get to select one asset from each team, but you can't select another asset from that same team.

For example: If you decide to pick the Rangers GM, you can't go back and select a player off their roster.

As for the other rules, here they are.

*The salary cap will be set at $85 million (only players salaries count against the cap)
*You need to fill the following positions;
                                                          GM, Coach, Assistant Coaches (x3)
                                                          Four forward lines
                                                          Three defensive lines
                                                          Two goaltenders

Anyone up for it?

Ok, so here's a run I took at it:

Gaudreau-Mackinnon-Hertl
Pettersson-Scheifele-Arvidsson
Tkachuk(OTT)-Barkov-Kakko
Keller-Couturier-Mantha

Hedman-Parayko
Keith-Jones(CBS)
Dahlin-Pesce

Bishop
Murray(PIT)

Head Coach: Barry Trotz
Assistant Coach: Bruce Cassidy
Assistant Coach: Bruce Boudreau
Assistant Coach: Todd Maclellan
General Manager: George McPhee

Cap Hit: 84.175 million

I think it's a nice mix of veterans and not too many guys on rookie deals. Keith or Scheifele is probably the Captain. Couturier and Barkov kill all the penalties.

But I have to ask why you chose George McPhee as GM?

I didn't think about it much to be honest. Of the teams I hadn't taken a guy from the only GMs that stood out were him, Ken Holland and the guy in Washington and I guess on balance I like his recent work more than either of the other two.

I'm going to adopt your philosophy of not thinking it too much.

This looks like fun. I just did a quick two minute version but realized I was over $100M. The cap is the hard part. I'll put more effort into it when I have time. You know, when I get to the office.

For rookies, are we using their total AAV including potential performance bonuses?

I just used what they count as in Capfriendly's team builder thing. So, yeah, I'm probably looking at some overages.

I'm trying not to load up on too many rookies so I'm gonna go with total AAV.

Marchand-MacKinnon-Kucherov
Gaudreau-Barkov-Wilson
Kreider-Barzal-DeBrincat
Coleman-Karlsson-Anderson

Ekholm-Parayko
Rielly-Pesce
Morrissey-Chabot

Gibson
Kuemper

GM: Yzerman
Head coach: Krueger
Assistant: Boudreau
Assistant: Julien
Assistant: Tippett

That roster comes in at $83mil, and as Team President I'll be collecting a $2mil bonus for my efficiency.

Tom Wilson was a weird choice for me since I don't particularly like the contract but I had a hole on the right wing and cash to burn and he was someone who jumped out from the few teams I hadn't picked from yet.

Fun exercise!  My Toronto Maple Leafs:

Hall-McDavid-Pastrnak
Petterson-MacKinnon-Lindholm (CGY)
Schwartz-Scheifele-Anderson (CBJ)
Domi-Borgstrom-Duclair

Josi-Burns
Gustaffson-Klingberg
Dahlin-Sergachev

Raanta
Dubnyk

GM: Steve Yzerman
Coach: Gerrard Gallant
Asst. Coach: Mike Sullivan
Asst. Coach: Tood McLellan
Asst. Coach: Rod Brind'Amour

Cap Hit: $84,144,165

I could have probably fit McDavid in but I chose not to. I'm not rescuing him from Edmonton. He signed that 8 year deal like a sucker he's gotta live with it.

Ha!

Any team I would start begins and ends with him, so I added him first, then worked everyone else in after that.

I see that all three of us took Mackinnon which makes a pretty strong argument for it being the best contract in the league but to be honest, I think if I had to vote for that I'd vote Barkov.

Barkov only had 3 less points than MacKinnon last season, played around worse players, and is roughly 1000x better defensively. So yeah I think he has a solid argument there.

Wouldn't Rielly have vanished?

Hmmmm. This one's Reilly. He has a moustache.
