Ryan O'Reilly, Jamie McGinn traded to Buffalo for Zadorov + more

I'm guessing this was talked about in the draft thread, but what's the consensus here? Seems like a pretty good deal for Buffalo. Eichel, Reinhart, Kane, and O'Reilly up front for them should be pretty solid.

Very solid upfront. Blueline is a bit of a question mark and their goaltending is really unproven. They won't be a basement team next year, though I'm not sure they'll be a playoff team, either.

I think the one concern is that, when you add guys like Girgensons, they've got a ton of depth up front but in the last five drafts this leaves them with only 2 defensemen they've taken in the first or second round.

I've seen what Zadorov can do at his best in the OHL and if he taps into that at the NHL level I think Buffalo regrets trading him away.  But yeah, that's some pretty solid depth up the middle.

Their defense could still end up being very good with Bogosian, Reinhart (assuming he starts to develop), Ristolainen as a starting point.  They certainly aren't going to be terrible next year.

What about the Colorado side?  Did they get enough for Reilly?  He is a pretty solid player.  Can't say I know much about the buffalo players ...

They have Sam, not Griffin. He's a C.

Their Reinhart is the younger/centre-ey one (Sam). But yeah defence will definitely be an area they need to start focusing on. I'm just glad they'll likely be out of the bottom-5 next season. Seeing them add someone like Matthews to that group would just be awful.

Whoops, got them mixed up.  Yeah, that defense is suspect.  I'm assuming they splurge on Franson in free agency.

I'd say it's a win for Colorado.

If they can come out of it with Zadorov and Kylington that's two pretty good pieces on defence coming back and that's exactly what they needed. Grigorenko's the big wild card here. The more I think about it the more even of a trade it seems. Everyone knew that the Avs weren't re-signing O'Reilly and that he's looking for a pretty massive contract.

That's a big part of it, too. I imagine Buffalo has every intention of giving that to him, but if he decides he doesn't want to stay with the Sabres, they just gave up a lot to have him for one season.

I guess the contract is bending it for me some, Zadorov should be a great fit for them and not overpaying for Ryan is pretty good too. Like you say, they could get another good player with the pick as well.

Even ignoring the "interesting" structure, this was the one reason I didn't want ROR. Great player, but he was definitely looking for $7mil+ and I'm not sure I like him at that number.

Really just a reflection of the new cap system I think. He's a second tier center, that's really second tier money.

His 2013-2014 year seems more like an aberration for him offensively.  He really seems more like a 20 goal, 30 assist player than a 30 goals 40 assist potential guy.  I'm not sure I want to pay 7.5M for 50 points.

That seems like a bit of a low estimate though. To me it's probably more like 60 points with solid two-way play. I'm not saying I love the deal but it's probably right in terms of the league's salary structure.
