Sabres, Eichel agree to eight-year, $80M extension

Sounds like an Eichel extension is just about done. Mckenzie saying it's in the 10 per range.

So, you know, that seems pretty relevant to Auston.

Yup. I think we have a pretty clear range of where his contract will land.

Given that, I guess hoping Matthews pulls a Crosby and signs for an annual salary based on his jersey number is a bit unrealistic at this point...

Oh, I don't know. He could sign for 34 million per.

Well, he is 3.4 times as awesome as Eichel.

This seems like a perfectly fine deal for Eichel.
He hasn't shown $10M per season value yet but I am sure he will. I like the contract. I could see Eichel being a top 5 player in the league really soon. Bodes well for future Leaf contracts. I also think the cap should go way up with the recent strengthening of the $CAD. I don't know how the cap wouldn't go up. $CAD hasn't been this strong for 2 years.

I wonder if the C comes along with this contract. I love Eichel as a player, but he doesn't exactly scream captain material to me. Granted he's still young so he can grow into that.

That would be a conflict of interest, it'd be hard for him to be both GM, Captain, and Coach.

The Sabres are probably paying him in stock options, so as part-owner Eichel can approve it.

No, he can't. :P

I'm not really sure "captain material" has any real concrete definition anymore. It's really whatever the team wants it to be. You'd be hard pressed to find two more different guys than Crosby and Ovechkin but both have been pretty good captains on pretty good teams.

He does talk a lot but he takes ownership for the teams hardships as well. I wouldn't put him on S@%t list just yet.
