TRADE ALERT --> #Oilers acquire forward Ted Purcell from @TBLightning in exchange for forward Sam Gagner.

Think that's a good deal for Tampa.  They're going to be really skilled offensively the coming years.

Er...maybe not:

@TSNBobMcKenzie

EDM's trade of Sam Gagner to TB for Ted Purcell doesn't necessarily mean Gagner will stay in TB. Buyout a possibility but so is a trade.

I guess Gagner is not that good.  Edmonton didn't get much for him and nether did Tampa.  Hard to believe this guy was 6th overall in his draft year.

Seems pretty reasonable all the way around. Edmonton gets a pretty solid winger, Tampa clears a bunch of cap space in a league that will be feeling a cap crunch and Phoenix gets to take a pretty reasonable gamble on Gagner for two years and 3.2 million per.

It sure feels as though Gagner's been in the league forever but he's only 14 months older than Nazem Kadri and hasn't even turned 25. He could still blossom into a 50-60 point center in the right situation.

If possible, Tampa got even less.

It just shows how clearing cap space is sometimes as important as the product you put on the ice.

One of the things I am most critical about with the Leafs is the stupid notion that we must be a cap team. Leafs could spend a lot less and be no worse on the ice than they are at present.

Cap management does not consist of spending as much as you can and then shedding assets for nothing; nor does it mean spending to the cap as some sort of false show that by so doing you are doing the best you can to ice the best possible team.

Watching him in junior hockey he has all of the talent in the world.  I agree that in the right scenario he could be a 50-60 point player and maybe he gets that opportunity as the 2nd line center in Phoenix now that Ribiero is gone.  He doesn't play defense but he has a lot of offensive skill.  Getting out of Edmonton will probably be good for his career.
