OTTAWA ? Ottawa Senators (@Senators) general manager Pierre Dorion announced today the club has acquired forward Derick Brassard and a seventh-round draft pick in 2018 from the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Mika Zibanejad and Ottawa?s second-round draft pick in 2018.

Umm. Okay. Probably not a huge difference in terms of production from either player. I get why the Rangers make the deal - they get younger, free up a little cap space right now, and add a 2nd round pick in exchange for a 7th. Not entirely clear on why Ottawa makes this deal, though - which, I suppose, it par for the course with the sens.

Brassard's cap hit is $5.5mil. He was paid a $2mil signing bonus on July 15th so his remaining salary for this season is only $3mil. And in the next 2 seasons his salary is only $3.5mil in each. So the sens are saving a fair bit of money vs. his cap hit there.

This is a horrible trade for the Sens.

They take on more money(cap hit, sure), get five years older and give up a second rounder for a guy like Brassard who outperformed Zibanejad by 21 points over the past two seasons on a significantly better team being given more opportunities.

Seems off to me.

Brassard 3.0, 3.5, 3.5 = 10M over the next 3 years
Zibanejad will probably cost more than that for those 3 years.

There's the easy answer for why they did it, cheap-o Eugene strikes again.

And before anyone says it.  If they decide to move away from a young core and start over, they gotta scorch the earth first, hence my rebuild comment.

Yes I know they look like they think this is a win now move.  But Brassard is likely about to start declining and they moved a younger player and higher pick for him.

Very tank.

You think they traded an early pick and a young player for a player who is currently more productive with the intention of getting worse, or do you just think it will just end up this way?

I think it might be a cost certainty thing.  Maybe they talked to Zibanejad about an extension, and he balked at the figures and the organization.  Although he'd be an RFA, he could still be a problem to sign..say what you want about the sens and Melnyk, but he does have to deal with the realities of less revenue that most.

As with Edmonton's Hall deal, maybe this was to get a guy that's under contract for a while.

TBH, I just think it will end up that way.  IMO, it is just more Melnyk penny pinching in spending of actual salary.

Brassard already had a 2M bonus paid, followed by two seasons of just 3.5 M of actual salary. 3M actual salary left this season.

Zibanejad is a pending RFA.  His Actual SALARY this season is would have cost Melnyk $250 K more.  He will be paid $3 250 000 in the coming season of actual salary.  How much do you think he signs for after that?

Yeah, the salary thing has already been pointed out as a likely reason for the deal.

And made the team older not better, IMO.  Even in the short term. I think Brassard also benefitted from better linemates in NY, than he'll have in Ottawa.

It must be infuriating to have Melnyk as an owner. There were a few gems from a presser he did before the end of the year when the sens were well out of playoff contention that make me think this is entirely a move motivated by financials. That, and potentially one that will make him think they're contenders (again) this year.

Who did he play with in NY?

Zuccarello and Nash were his most frequent at even strength...

Does Ottawa have a Zuccarello-type for Brasard?  It seems that the Brassard-Zuccarello tandem proved itself very well for the Rangers.

It's'going to be interesting to see how Brassard performs and what numbers he posts with the Sens.  Unless Ottawa thinks he's the second coming of Jason Spezza in his prime.

According to Larry Brooks, the Rangers only agreed to pay Brassard's $2mil signing bonus if the sens added that 2nd round draft pick to the deal.
