Server Issues

Big apologies for all of the glitches and downtime the last week.  It's getting worse, not better, and I'm on our webhost provider daily.  And they charge $95/hr to troubleshoot.

Hopefully we get resolution quickly - I'm hoping to go to the cottage for a week starting Friday.

Forgive the ignorance I'm not a computer tech guy, but why do they charge money to fix there own servers? Or are they your servers and just hosted by this company?

At any rate, what is causing the problem, because if it's them, they certainly shouldn't be charging anything other than the monthly payment they already get?

I'll demand a refund if this thing goes down on July 1st.

Speaking of money, how can I do that email cash wire to you Rick?

It's about time I contributed again.

They charge me $125US per month.  For that I get the use of their server hardware, which is somewhere down in the States.  I also get a set amount of harddrive storage, ram to speed things along, and multiple connectivity (that's how we have up to 500 people on here at a time).

I look after the software, to a large extent.  I log in from my terminal and make changes and upgrades to that server.  This forum, the front page (wordpress), etc are all things I have to install and maintain.

Often the shutdowns are a mix of my software not working quite right, and their server not up-to-date enough to override these errors.

Usually, between them and I, we can keep the bandages on.  I'm haggling with them right now for a new server...

I'd rather you give me a cheap car Frank!  Our 2007 Mazda5 is awesome, except it's drinking a litre of oil weekly - with no leaks, everything checks out by Kieswetter Mazda.  They're suggesting a used engine for $3500 ...

The email transfer of money can be sent to rcouchman@rogers.com.  Thanks, as always!!

I wouldn't do it Rick.  I don't think you'll get much of return on that.

PM me your budget, requirements, etc...I'll see what my guys have.

Donation on the way.

Thanks Frank, really appreciated - the donation and the advice.  We're heading off Friday for 10 days vacation.  I'm not going to think car buying until we get back.  Hopefully...

The closest I've come to running a website is my old Geocities page.  But that sounds like allot of coin, for what sounds like allot of bad service.  Is that a good rate?

They've normally had pretty good service.  For having your own server, $125/mth isn't bad.  We've been kicked off a dozen other webhosts over the past 15 years.  We'd always choke their other sites with traffic.  We had no choice but to get our own...
