I've seen reports of 18 children dead, including the principal, school psychiotrist among others.

Absolutely horrific.

This stuff is happening every week now, something has to give somewhere no?

If this doesn't bring an end to the gun control debate I'm not sure anything ever will.

The US gun homicide rate is 20x that of 22 other developed nations combined.

There have been 31 school shootings in the US since Columbine.. on the rest of the planet in that same time span? 14.

A: Get guns under control
B: PROTECT YOUR SCHOOLS

Pull the cop cherry picking speeders in school zones and put him/her in the actual school?

EDIT: Then put photo radar on the street (school zones only) to replace those cops.

How does he even gain entry into the school? a lot of schools in Winnipeg, you can enter the first door, but to get past the second door, you need to be buzzed in, and they are strict on who they let into the school.

One news site said he was a father of one of the school's students, so he was probably known to the secretary.

Impossible to say at this point obviously but not every school is like that and there are reports that the shooter had some sort of connection to the school so he may have worked there or had another legitimate reason to be there.

As long as the NRA holds sway over both our political parties, nothing will change.  In the meantime, there will be a flood of pious mouthings, expressions of great sadness, useless prayers for the victims, etc. etc.  Sorry to be cynical and heartless-sounding in the face of horrific violence, but the sad fact is we in the US not only tolerate it, we glorify it.  As H. Rap Brown once said, "Violence is as American as cherry pie."  And nothing does violence like a proliferation of guns.

It's highly unlikely that there will ever be any movement on gun control.

Instead, maybe they should be taking a long look at what it is about American society that keeps creating these people.

they've identified him as 20 year old Ryan  Adam Lanza. (Ryan is the older brother) So, likely not a parent of a child at the school. But yikes, regardless.

I'm horrified. And otherwise, at a loss for words really.

Prayers to those mourning loved ones.

egads, apparently according to one report in the US, Lanza's mother taught at the school and is one of the victims.

I can appreciate the cynicism about anything changing as a result of this, but this..... if any event is going to finally flip the switch, you would thing an elementary school full of dead children might be it.

now watch over the next few days while they make a celebrity out of this ...person....ensuring once again that some other unbalanced individual will seek this path to "glory"  ....maybe for once we could just focus on the victims ...i really don't want to know anything about the shooter...

maybe if i believed that as a society we would learn from it there'd be a value ...but i think it'll all be rubber necking

anyway..this is awful...

This will hold the news cycle for about a week.  And then back to business as usual.  The NRA calls the tune in this country.  End of story.

Speaking to this point, I think this makes the case fairly eloquently:
