Defending champion Canada defeated Mountfield HK 5-3 in their opening game of the 2017 Spengler Cup hockey tournament.

Scoring for Team Canada came from the likes of P.A. Parenteau, Mason Raymond, David McIntyre, Victor Bartley & Curtis Hamilton.

While most people probably aren't particularly familiar with some of the Canadian names, Hockey Canada is taking a keen interest in this Euro-based Canadian squad, as it seeks to further determine potential players for it's Olympic roster.

(Most of the well-known hockey playing nations will not be represented by NHLers in the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympic Games scheduled to take place in PyeongChang (South Korea).

Canada's next game is Thursday against HC Davos.

Champs!

Canada shuts out Switzerland 3-0 in today's (Sunday) Spengler Cup Final.

It was Canada's third straight Spengler Cup Championship and tied HC Davos for the most Cup wins at 15.  Plus, Canada's tree-straight Cup wins are eclipsed only by Canada's four-straight set in 1995 to 1998.

Canada got goals from Zach Boychuk, Maxim Moreau, & David McIntyre.  Goaltender Kevin Poulin made 36 saves.

"We had a special group," Poulin said. "We played well, we played hard and we played the Team Canada way all along."

As for final Olympic roster selections which will be set after the New Year (January 11), there could be several players from this Spengler Cup squad:

"
This group just made it tougher (to make selections)," Desjardins said. "We had lots of guys today that played great. The Swiss have a really good team. So lots of guys gave themselves a better chance because of today."
