Steve Staios, a veteran defenceman of 18 seasons in the National Hockey League, announced his retirement as an active player on Wednesday. The Hamilton, Ontario native played in 1,001 career regular season games and 33 more in the NHL postseason from 1995 to 2012. He has accepted a position with the Toronto Maple Leafs as Player Development Advisor.

Good for him, hopefully whatever limited influence he will have will be a positive for the organization as a whole.

It does strike me as a 'favour' for someone who was a good soldier back in the day though, not that there is much wrong with that, again, as long as he has a positive impact.

That's great news. I had been worrying about who was giving them their player development advice and now I know.

Curious what a gig likes this pays?  How many an organization would have in this role?  How many hours a week one would need to punch?

$5 per hour plus an extra $2 per hour per player.  You get 2 popsicles from the fridge per day.

Very generous, not much wonder we haven't the resources to grab a popsicle for Semen then.

Yes but can he play goal?

I can already hear Burke via a Pierre LeBrun blog update

?If we can upgrade at the goaltending position, and at a reasonable price, we?ll do it. But we are prepared to go with Reimer and Staois. I believe in Steve Staois. He?s young, he?s athletic, I believe in this kid. If we have to start like that, we will.?

Isn't this old news?  I seem to recall Burke speaking about this in an interview last month.

He's been in the capacity since June, but I guess never officially announced for whatever reason.

That's why we drafted D in the first 2 rounds... ;)
