Really....

Was this a power move by McTavish or was Tambelinni doing that bad a job with the Oilers?

I think it's a dumb move. Not firing Tambellini, but keeping Lowe and MacTavish as head guys here. Doesn't change hange a thing really, just the name of GM. And funny how Howson got a job quick after his Columbus years. I guess for his Bobrovsky trade alone he deserved a chance. Oh well, time will show but can't see how this changes anything in Edmonton going to this summer.

Yeah, I fully agree, they're just changing the figurehead while the rest of their old boys club is still intact.

If they were looking to add credibility/change in culture, Brian Burke would have been a much better replacement.

I was actually talking to local radio about it few days ago. Burke is the guy who builds via free agents and trades (exactly what Oilers need to add, since they already have enough prospects for two Junior teams). He also brings toughness and that's a big issue with this team, they have no grid and are too easy to play against. Burke keeps everyone on the edge with his personality, which is a good thing for Oilers who are playing with no emotion and no drive whatsoever. He would have been a good fit here.

Wow! One of the greatest press conferences I have seen. Thanks to Edmonton media asking very tough questions and pretty much telling them that fans don't believe in this management. Lowe was pissed. Also he made few very bad statements such as "we have fans who pay and fans who watch". Watch it just for entertaining.

MacTavish inherits quite a collection of young talent assembled for him by Tambellini. Aside from goal, they look like they're in pretty good shape with some young players who promise to become elite (and are the type who are hardest to acquire).

What's wrong with their goaltending?  Dubnyk has been .916 SV% or higher for 3 straight seasons now.

Maybe not a lot. I've never been completely sold on Dubnyk. But my comments were poorly written as I was thinking about what Tambellini had brought in in terms of young assets - Dubnyk was drafted well before he came along.

I wonder if Dave Nonis picks up Tambellini who worked for Dave in Vancouver ...

He could be to Nonis, what Nonis was to Burke.

I get the impression that Dave likes to be more hand on though, so I don't know.

When JFJ and Tambellini were candidates for the Leafs GM job, it was reported by the media that Quinn preferred Tambellini, as did I at the time. He's not a bad hockey executive and will probably get another shot as GM somewhere. I think Peddie nixed it so he could have his own boy with JFJ.

I prefer what he did for the Oilers over what Burke did for the Leafs. He's collected a bunch of good, potentially elite young players we'll continue to crave for. And they will blossom pretty soon.

The talent level on the Oilers is undeniable, but, I'm not sure there's enough cohesion there for them to really break through. In the next couple years, they're going to have some tough decisions to make, and it really wouldn't surprise me to see one of their #1 picks get moved in order to build a more cohesive unit.

It's an enviable problem to have though. If they have too many elite #1 forwards, they can flip one for a similarly aged pretty decent dman.

The other thing that I expect will happen is that it will become a more attractive destination for UFAs like it was for Shultz because they'll offer a respectable chance to win because their youth represents a few shots at the big prize. So it will snowball some in their ability to attract UFA talent to help deliver that needed cohesion.

In many ways I see them as very similar to the early/mid-90s Nordiques.  A lot of pretty young high-end talent that needs some seasoning, maturity and a few well-orchestrated trades to reach the top.

I really don't see a deal happening, but I can't help but wonder if Luongo could be the Patrick Roy in this scenario.

Howson has a long history with the Oilers organization. He was the GM of their AHL affiliate when it was in Cape Breton and then Hamilton. He was also the assistant GM in Edmonton from 2002-07 before he got the Columbus job. On short notice, you go with a known quantity.
