...The pangs of despised love, the Law?s delay,
The insolence of Office and the Spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his Quietus make
With a bare Bodkin? who would Fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered Country from whose bourn
No Traveler returns, Puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus Conscience does make Cowards of us all;
And thus the Native hue of Resolution
Is sicklied o?er with the pale cast of Thought,
And enterprises of great pitch and moment
With this regard their Currents turn awry,
And lose the name of Action. Soft you now,
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy Orisons
Be all my sins remembered.

Most days, i try my best to stay positive--out there, in the wilderness. Most days, it's the only way to survive: to believe that you will survive. We wear these silly blue shirts, as if that will protect us from this or that. But we keep our chins up, in the wilderness. There isn't much else for choice.

But some mornings, i don't see much point in leaving the cave. What am i trying to prove, and to whom? That i can raise a son as equally belligerent and drunk as myself? That, perhaps one day, his children's children might carry my pointless baggage just like i did? Is that the kind of thing that makes most people feel better, knowing they dropped a huge steamer on the future by way of their own ignorance?

Like i said, most days, i try to stay positive. For those other days, days like yesterday, for when the sky truly seems like it's falling, i hope you'll come hide in here with me.

I don't want to hear excuses, because there aren't any good enough. Last night was a crime against humanity. Sure, Joffrey telling it like it is was nice, but how much "nice to be nice" am i supposed to tolerate? How much, before all the saccharine class acts and candy-coated explanations give me diabetes?

The sky is falling.

Wow. I wonder if  Kessel, JVR, Gardner, Kadri etc actually get this upset when they lose. I'm guessing they go back to their condos, turn on the video games, and say a collective "whatever".

Of course you do.

The sign seemed pretty clear to me, hanging by the door, there.

I think the author's point, if they had one, was that the ebb and flow of this season seems to only get stranger. It must have been at least two decades since we left the Hawks with 7 goals in the bag. And a night like last night struck me as another improbable outcome.

Runaway leaders in shots conceded per game (36 and change), while holding down 27th place in shots for. That certainly doesn't suggest anything good.

Again, the author is predominantly a pretty optimistic Leaf supporter. But if i left the rink after a game like that without at least scratching my head, i think i'd be missing a few important lessons for a team several seasons into being among the league's youngest.

Sometimes, i want to squint at all the stats and scratch my head. Other times, having no clear indicator that the team should be anywhere but the league cellar, i try and take an old-school "meant and potatoes", holistic, if not deliberately naive approach and just go with it. Neither decision satisfies my confusion, and both point the compass toward doom, which i find impossible to accept.

I understand that this is the enigma of Toronto, likely a problem much larger and more incomprehensible than a few mutually exclusive statistics this year. So without a clear belief, i built this place, built it with my own two hands. It's not an everyday kind of place, since i try my best to keep my chin up. But some days, i'd rather keep my chin up in dingy apocalyptic shelter, than have to argue in a pub with some self-entitled, loudmouth Bruins fan.

I think the generally accepted practice for most professionals would be to take home whatever notes were provided by the management, and arrive at the next work day both prepared to move forward and willing to resolve any deficiencies in the current plan.

Of course, we all remember how much Bill Durnan used to love sulking in the dark after horrible losses, alone with his six Vezinas and game of cup-and-ball, so perhaps, for champions, they must find their own path to truth, in life and in sport.

I would think that apathy is the reaction i'd be most unsettled to see.

Syntax, you have a strange ( and by that I mean unusual) way of looking at Leafs hockey.

I like it.

I take it you have followed the Leafs for some time now, as I have. One thing that has not changed since forever is that it apparently never crosses the mind of whoever is in charge that a proper rebuild might be in order.

Since a rebuild seems to be crazy talk, I guess it's a matter of working with what's there. There's some talent on this team, but there isn't a dominant leader who can take over a game on his own, i.e. a current day Matts Sundin or Doug Gilmour.

Until such a player arrives, the Leafs are a work in progress. The progress seems to be in reverse right now, but that's the way it is.

I think the payroll suggests that Kessel and Dion are those guys. No cup winner would ever kick either of those two out of bed, and the same can probably be said for JvR, Reimer, Bernier, Rielly, Jake, Bolland (hurt, but the point still stands), maybe even Bozak.

My problem is that the team always looks better than NHL*year suggests. It really has me considering a curse, of sorts. I always come back to the 2006 Hurricanes with this. Take a real look, statistical and gut instinct, about that lineup. Compare it to these Leafs.

What even is a cup winner, when that team can do it?

Full respect for calling me crazy, by the way. Thumbs up.

Shall I compare Leafs to a Cup winner?
Thou art more Lupully and more desperate.
Trade winds do shake the darling Buds of Tranna,
And Carlyle's leash hath all too long a date;

Sometime too hot the gaffes of Bernier shine,
And oft is Reimer's gold complexion dimm'd;
And every team from first sometime declines,
By chance or statistical regression to the mean untrimm'd;

But thy eternal rebuild shall not fade,
Nor gain possession of that puck thou ow'st;
Nor shall Chara tweet thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal defensive mode thou cover'st:

So long as fans can breathe or own TV,
So long live Leafs, and this gives Leafs to thee.

Very nice.

It reminded me that I did a takeoff on the same sonnet back in 2007 when Tucker and Avery were going at it.  Back when Avery was on the Rags and had done something to annoy Tucker in the warmup? ...  I can't remember exactly.  But this is what I came up with (with a reference to Campbell, the league disciplinarian, Cuthbert, and those two twins who were popular then):

Sonnet for a Certain Member of the Opposition

Shall I compare thee to a bag of douche?
Thou art more ugly and intemperate.
Rough words thou?d speak? ? Ferme la bouche!
Lest well-deserv?d beatings consummate!

We devoutly wish thee neither seen, nor heard;
Ah! Would that Coley sent thee packing!
As Elisha did, who flushed thee like a turd,
And the Thin Twin, who found thine manhood lacking.

Yes, sometimes too hot our tempers run
With lust to see thy smugness all unfrocked;
But who can blame us?  It?s so much fun
To contemplate thy sneering mug well-clocked.

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
We?ll hope for this: that Darcy feeds thy teeth to thee.

I approve of this thread.  I expect a full drunken onslaught in here after tonight's lopsided loss.

Did I say that out loud?

Hey, tomorrow is Saturday, most of us can drink and not have to worry about showing up to work tomorrow.  Aren't we lucky?

I've made a song for this thread, based on Lorde's "Royals" song.  In case you haven't heard it listen here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFasFq4GJYM

"Leafs"
I've never seen a winner in the flesh
I cut my teeth on losing streaks on the tv
And i'm not proud of my franchise
In a torn-up league, no backcheck envy

But every team's like draft high, build up, playing in the playoffs
Work hard, try more, winning in a few years
We don't care, we're driving zambonis in our dreams
But every team's like young stud, art ross, making a contender
Win games, play hard, bringing home a Stanley
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair

And we'll never be champions (champions)
It's just not in our blood
That kind of game's just not for us
We crave a different kind of loss
Let me be your d-man (d-man)
You can call me real bum
And baby I'll suck, I'll suck, I'll suck, I'll suck
Let me live that nightmare
