My Three Dogs:
Left to Right: Friend (a Shepherd/Lab cross rescue Feb 1983-May 1993); Rafiki (a Shepherd/Lab cross rescue-- the Swahili word for Friend, Apr 1993-May 2007) and Miko (Shepherd/Rottweiler cross rescue Feb 2007 to present, Miko is short for Amico, the Italian word for Friend)
This photo is of a wood carving my father did, working from photographs of the dogs. It's the lid of a hopechest; one of four in my house all of which represent something special to the owner. This particular chest belongs to my husband.
Story about Friend: He was a huge hockey fan. He was the only child spoiled dog of newlyweds. Saturday night was Cookie Night in Canada in our house. Friend got a Milkbone treat every time the Leafs scored a goal. Wendel Clark and Steve Thomas made Friend fat.
He was an exceptionally perceptive dog. We both worked full time when we got him, and I unwound at night by watching MASH reruns. Friend knew that MASH was quality Mom-hugs-me-because-the-tv-makes-her-cry time. It got to the point where when he heard the theme music for MASH, he'd park at the foot of the couch he knew I'd be sitting on. After a year or so of this (I always attributed it to the music) I realised something else. I was doing laundry one day, and there's Friend, having assumed the MASH position at the couch. I'm thinking WTF for the longest time and happened to look up at the TV. Phil Donahue was on....and guest starring on the show that day was Alan Alda. Hmmmm. I say. A month or so later, he's there at the couch again and I wonder why. Days of our Lives is on tv. Hmmm. And I pay half attention and realise 'holy cow, this actor looks and sounds like Alan Alda, only way younger.' So I sit down (hug the dog) and wait for credits to come on. And damn if it isn't *Antony* Alda on the show. Yep, Alan's sound alike, look alike younger half brother.
