The PK: Winnik's Clinic Silences the Cynics (so far)

Since penalty killing is critical to the team's success, perhaps it deserves its own thread.  Good article by Siegel:

Key to the early success has been the forward combination of Winnik and Komarov.

Winnik, whom Komarov calls "the boss in this PK", has yet to be on the ice for a power-play goal against, his size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds), skating ability and smarts proving quite effective - particularly up ice and in shooting lanes.

Mirtle's got an article on it today too: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/leafs-beat/is-the-leafs-penalty-kill-really-improved/article21188956/

You guys remember Jay McClement?

He was a big part of the reason they went from 28/29/30 to 2 season before last.  That table in Siegel is insane.

Sure, but then he was also a big part of the reason it went from 2 to 28 again. McClement had one of the worst shot attempt rates against on the PK last season in the league.

Kind of hard to blame that on him when the entire unit sucked in that regard last year. Phaneuf and Bozak are below him and Gunnar, Franson and Kulemin aren't much ahead. That doesn't read like something Jay McClement caused.

There's more to it than just McClement - that's too convenient of an argument.  He was not solely responsible for the decline (just like he wasn't solely responsible for the 2nd place finish either).

I think he was answering the first assertion in the sense of "sure, if I accept that premise then..."

Get out of my head.

And I still never said anything about him being the sole reason or most deserving of blame.
