There Goes Datsyuk's NHL Career... Officially

Sad if true. He was one of those guys you really enjoyed watching play. Nobody made goalies look bad the way he did:

Datsyuk is going to be an interesting HOF case. Not in the sense that I think there's any real doubt that he should go in but that it'll be interesting to see if his lack of traditional credentials(sub PPG, under 1000 points, no major awards/first team All Star Teams) hurts him with the more hidebound of the committee.

Three straight Selke awards and a Hart nomination. As you said, there's no real doubt he'll get in, but I don't think there'll be much hesitation either.

My faith in the intelligence/reasonableness of the HOF committee is not terribly strong.

This isn't like Lindros though, Datsyuk's one of the most universally respected players of his generation.

Lindros is just one questionable call among many.

I guess that sort of depends on what you mean by decent. Detroit's neither in a terrible cap situation nor in a win now at all costs position. They can sign all of their RFA's and put in a competitive offer for Stamkos and still be cap compliant.

If they do manage to pull off a big deal UFA signing they might want to free up more space and try to jump back into contention but even then, you're not going to get major assets for taking on one year of bad money.

Not top prospect major, but, Florida just gave up a 2nd round pick to lose one year of bad money on Savard. So, for $7.5M in dead space? My guess is the price would probably be at least a pair of 2nd round picks.

That being said, if they need to clear space, my guess is Detroit's preference would be to find a taker for Howard. The return wouldn't be great, but it probably wouldn't cost them assets to move him.

To be fair, Florida's not being run by Ken Holland. I don't think they set the market.

Probably not, but, we've also never seen a team try to move that much dead space in one deal. As much as Florida may not have set the market, the Savard deal is still going to be something other teams bring to the negotiation.

apparently they only have until july 1 to deal the contract because once it is officially terminated it can't be traded?  Holland already said he is not optimistic it can be traded for a price that hes comfortable with.

I think maybe they're going to try the old one year tank and retool plan.

we'll see I guess.

Sure, but the only real condition that matters is how eager Detroit is to move that salary. Ultimately I'm sure they'd like to but the Florida deal really smacks of trying to win with the exact group they've got around them. Like you said, Detroit's back isn't against the wall here. They have other options for moving salary and while Datsyuk's cap hit sucks, you don't actually have to pay him so it's not quite on a par with other bad contracts.

Is Kessel's 1.2 per year tradeable? Wonder if Detroit would prefer a lower, yearly total to the single year 7.5 hit.

Datsyuk putting them in this position might have been the best thing to happen to the Wings IF Holland is smart enough to take this route. Trade Zetterberg and Kronwall. Put down a quasi-tank effort to get a top-5 pick this year.

Because right now, they're in a pretty terrible spot. All their best players are aging or now in Russia. They don't really have any impact prospects in the pipeline. Their blueline is an absolute mess. And they have some terrible contracts in Abdelkader/Ericsson/Howard/Franzen. Their poised to be stuck in that 8-10 spot in the East I think. And even if they ditch Datsyuk's contract and sign Stamkos I still think that only pushes them into pretender status. I think that Stamkos would be a good fit with Detroit in terms of them needing a 1C, the market, and the fact that they'd be able to offer a big cap hit (again, if Datsyuk's disappears), but if he's chasing a Cup he's going to be very disappointed.
