Trade Process

I assume that a trade between two teams involves a written contract.  I've never actually seen one, but I also assume that it outlines the details of the trade.  In the case of a draft pick, would it include the name of the team that originally held the pick?

I only ask because what would happen if Edmonton proposed a deal to trade the 16th pick to a team.  In the contract though, they forgot to write in the 6.  If nobody from the Oilers caught the error, would they then have to give the 1st overall pick to the team in the trade?  Could they argue that it wasn't their intention to trade that pick and use verbal accounts to get out of the contract?  Or would they be dead in the water?

I'm not saying that this would ever happen, but I just wonder what the hypothetical outcome would be.

In trade documentation, I'd imagine the picks are identified by round and by original owner.

In this scenario, the pick wouldn't be called 16th overall, it would be called Pittsburgh's 1st round pick.

I think they'd actually be identified as both once their position in the draft has been defined. Up until that point though, yeah, by team, round and year.

Also, the trade call is in place to make sure this kind of scenario doesn't happen. Before a trade is officially filed with the league, both teams need to verify the moving parts in a conference call with the league's central registry. An error like this wouldn't pass that stage.

Yeah...but...what if the phone was crackly and they misunderstood each other?...Would the Leafs get McDavid then?

There's a few videos of trade calls actually going down if anyone is interested:

http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=160804 (Hodgson to BUF)
http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=235224 (Gaborik to NYR)
http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=100428 (Penner to LA)

The Penner one has picks involved and even gives you a look at the documents that are filled out during a trade. Everything has to be pretty clearly defined so I doubt there would be any confusion once you reach this point.

I would imagine after what went down with the Lindros trade they started dotting all the i's and crossing the t's.
