I know quite a few of you use Twitter quite a bit...  I have Tweetdeck installed on my laptop and plain Twitter app on my iphone...  Question:  how do you follow the action when you have 1000+ people you're following?! Everything flies by on my timeline with new updates every 5-10 seconds?

Sounds like you might want to create some "Lists".  Probably too much to type here, but for example, you could have a "TSN" list, and then put Dreger, Bobbie Mac et al in there and then have a separate list for "Leafs" and all the players in there.

As an aside, I'd really recommend Tweetbot for your iPhone, it's a moral imperative!  Same goes if you have an iPad and / or Mac (currently beta, although rock solid).

Twitter has their own app which hasn't been great.  They acquired Tweetdeck and quickly nerfed it.

Tweetbot is my favourite app of all time.

Yup lists is the way to go, don't just follow people willy nilly cause you'll soon be swamped with updates and can't possibly follow all the messages as you've discovered.  I have a bunch of separate lists I use, "sports", "news", "tech" etc that I split up the stuff.  Way easier to manage that way.

And how to you manage those lists in something like Tweetdeck?  Separate columns for each list?

Pretty much.

Here is a quick starter (50 seconds)

So, I still don't quite understand this tweety thing, but I'll give it a shot. I've made some lists, but it still seems so disorganized. I'm only following about 20 people or so, but it's impossible to keep track. I'm I doing something wrong? Should I read tweets by clicking on the person's profile?

Is this what my parents felt like when trying to hook up their first VCR?

It looks like you're on the right track.  The fact that you are organizing lists means that you're well on your way (and thanks for adding me to your list!)

Yes, click on a profile and you should see options that allow you see their Followers, Following and Tweets, from there just click Tweets.

Use @username to communicate with other users. Searching by @username will list tweets where that person is mentioned.

Use #topicname (a.k.a. hashtag) to view tweets relating to that topic.

Don't expect immediate results, just follow a few of your favourite players/celebrities/writers/friends whomever. Get a feel for what they're discussing and then choose how you'd like to interact and participate.  So, less like the hooking up a VCR comparison, more like showing up to a large party that's broken off into groups..and seeing where you want to chime in.  :)

I never thought I'd be a tweeter...started off with a few occasional posts, wondered if I was wasting my time. It took me a while, but I eventually got hooked.  One of my more recent highlights was getting a response from Hayley Wickenheiser as we discussed our mutual outrage over Olympics refereeing.  :o

It takes a while, but all I can say is give it a chance.

i think with twitter you have to take it at face value - a time waster. There is NO way you can ever keep up with every person you follow, and read every tweet that goes through your timeline - unless twitter is all you do all day long haha. I follow 600 or so people, and I probably read less than 10% of the tweets. WHen i have time to kill, ill go to twitter and read the first few pages of tweets. If I see someone whose tweets I am particularly entertained by I might click on their profile to read all their recent tweets, or any that I may have missed.
