The risk is Robertson will be UFA upon the expiry of this deal.

I mean they already lost players this offseason due to cap crunch. Dallas is currently 1.3M over the cap with 13F/7D 2G. They would have had to trade more guys away to sign him to a bigger deal. This seems like the most logical approach.

Yep, just couldn't do it this season while still carrying full freight on Tyler Seguin's nearly 10M final year.
I don't think the UFA risk is all that high (Robertson turned down 15Mx7 from Seattle) unless there's some other actual contender with 15M available sniffing around.

If he has another season like he just had, he'll be asking for $20million on a long term deal. Given how the cap is going it won't be unreasonable either.
